This thesis is an analysis of ‘tteura,’ a specific performing technique of the janggu, hourglass drum that is recorded in “Shaman Rhythms” of Ji Yeong-Hee’s Compilation of Folk Music Research―a source cited and referenced in many dissertations and researches. ‘Tteura’ is a gueum or oral mnemonics of the janggu’s chaepyeon, right end or higher-pitched end that not only serves as a connector between jangdans, or rhythmic patterns, but also considered a significant technique when performing Gyeonggi provincial shaman rhythms. However, renditions from gueum notations fall short from accuracy when the source is isolated. This is because of the variance in types of ‘tteura’ notations, such as ‘deura,’ ‘tteuri,’ ‘deureo’ and so on that portray strong and weak beats, beginnings and endings of rhythmic cycles, and characteristics unique in certain rhythms. Therefore, the purpose of this thesis is to establish a theoretical system regarding the performing methods of shaman rhythms documented in “Shaman Rhythms” of Ji Yeong-Hee’s Compilation of Folk Music Research, through a collective then analytical process of repeating ‘tteura’ patterns. The results are in the following: First, the characteristics of ‘tteura’ were distinguished then analyzed by comparing and understanding the annotations in “Shaman Rhythms” of Ji Yeong-Hee’s Compilation of Folk Music Research, and Lim Su-Jeong’s Korea’s Folk Music, and interviews with Ji Soon-Ja― second edition publisher of Ji Yeong-Hee’s Compilation of Folk Music Research. Second, among the shaman rhythms of Ji Yeong-Hee’s Compilation of Folk Music Research, ‘connective-type tteura’ was identified in Baedarimori, Bujeongnori, Ollimchae, Salpurimori, Salpuri, Teobeollim, and Pusal; ‘ending-type tteura’ was found in Dangak, Bongdeungchae, and Jajin Gutgeori. Third, ‘gida,’ a different gueum appeared regularly in Dosalpuri and Pusal, which are also shaman rhythms recorded in Ji Yeong-Hee’s Compilation of Folk Music Research. In conclusion, after a thorough analysis of the types of tteura that repetitively reappeared in both western notations and jeongganbo, or traditional mensural notations of Ji Yeong-Hee’s Compilation of Folk Music Research, it was discovered that: there was a connective-type ‘tteura’ in Baedarimori, Salpuri, Salpurimori, Ollimchae, Bujeongnori, Teobeollim and Pusal that combined beats within a jangdan; there was also an ‘ending-type tteura’ in Dangak, Bongdeungchae, Jajin and Gutgeori that decorated the ending of each jangdan; and finally there was an additional unique gueum, ‘gida’ that was present in Dosalpuri and Pusal.
