Holography has been invented by Dennis Gabor(1900~1979) in 1948. A hologram provides optical reconstruction of a 3D object by recording a wave-front of light coming from it onto a holographic emulsion. A widely used approach to record 3D information in analogue and digital holography is the holographic stereogram which is built from hogels. The hogel stands for a holographic element, which records the data carried by a hogel image. The hogel images are created by acquiring multi-view perspective images from a real 3D scene or a computer graphic model. The holographic stereogram can be printed by a holographic printer as a white light viewable volume hologram. Printing a holographic stereogram is an expensive process, but before observing optical reconstruction from the printed holographic stereogram, there is no way to determine whether its contents have abnormalities. Optical reconstruction can be replaced with its numerical counterpart but this is computationally extensive and requires a lot of memory space. Therefore, I propose a method for numerical reconstruction of a holographic stereogram to detect possible abnormalities in its contents without printing. The method allows for more effective use of the allocated memory as well as acceleration of numerical experiments . To make a holographic stereogram, after generating a computer graphic model by a computer, multi-view perspective images are acquired from this model. The acquired perspective images are used to generate the hogel images for the elements of the holographic stereogram by rearrangement of their pixels. The hogel images are recorded by the holographic printer onto holographic emulsion. So, to propose a numerical reconstruction of a holographic stereogram, a geometry relating the stereogram and the viewer is designed and an algorithm for numerical reconstruction is proposed. Experimental verification of numerical reconstruction of a holographic stereogram can be done by comparing it to optical reconstruction from a printed hologram. To produce rapidly a holographic stereogram, I propose a method for generation of hogel images by ray-tracing. Acquisition of multi-view images and pixels rearrangement are parts of generation of hogel images which encode the angular intensity distribution of the light coming from the 3D object at each point of the hologram. So, if the angular intensity distribution is acquired by one shot, a hogel image could be generated by one step. To fulfill this task, a ray-tracing algorithm based on geometry of acquiring a pixel along a ray is proposed. The algorithm makes use of a virtual lens implemented by ray-tracing. The hogel images generated by ray-tracing are used to print a holographic stereogram onto a holographic emulsion. The same hogel images are used to build numerically the stereogram. Then the optical reconstruction from the printed holographic stereogram is compared to the numerical reconstruction. By reducing the time for generation of a hogel image, the overall time needed for numerical reconstruction of the holographic stereogram can be decreased. Numerical reconstruction of a holographic stereogram needs all hogel images, thus, all hogel images must be generated before building numerically the reconstruction image. This is a drawback of direct implementation of numerical reconstruction. To make numerical reconstruction of a holographic stereogram a more effective process, another ray-tracing algorithm is proposed based on a new reconstruction geometry in which ray-tracing is extended to the viewer position. In an experiment, numerical reconstruction of holographic stereogram built by forming hogel images is compared with numerical reconstruction of holographic stereogram built by the ray-tracing approach. The experiment proved that the proposed method is more effective. A simulation experiment for evaluating the impact of hogel images with radial distortion on quality of reconstruction from a holographic stereogram is performed by using the developed algorithm for numerical reconstruction. As a first step, hogel images are generated at different values of the distortion coefficient, and similarity between the distorted hogel images and the undistorted one is measured by using the PSNR and SSIM metrics. As a second step, numerically reconstructed images are generated for holographic stereograms built from distorted hogel images. The same is done for a holographic stereogram built by using undistorted hogel images. As in the case of the hogel images, similarity of reconstruction from a holographic stereogram with distortion to that from distortion-free stereogram is measured by using PSNR and SSIM. By applying the developed algorithms, I can reduce time of generating the holographic stereogram contents and perform effectively its numerical reconstruction. Thus quality of contents encoded in a holographic stereogram can be easily checked. Also, the impact of hogel images with radial distortion on quality of reconstruction of a holographic stereogram can be evaluated. I expect that this thesis will help for producing high-quality holographic stereograms.
