As nuclear power plants (hereinafter referred to as “the plants”) continue to age, studies on decontamination and decommissioning of the plants have been drawing attention. Concrete takes up the most of radioactive waste from the decommissioning process of the plants; and evaluation of the radioactive inventory provides vital guidelines for plan establishment, risk analysis, cost evaluation, and waste management that are required for the decommissioning process.
Evaluation of the radioactive inventory is carried out through activation codes. The present study tested and compared one of the activation modeling codes, MCNP-CINDER code system, through the Burn card option of MCNPX 2.6.0 and MCNP-ORIGEN code system. The UO2 single pin, simple RPV and concrete wall were modelled for the comparison. The comparison and test result showed that the MCNPX 2.6.0 enables the highest calculation accuracy and most practical approach for solving the problem. However, its calculation time increased exponentially for a complicated calculation. The advantage of the MCNP-ORIGEN code system is that it is simple to use and widely used, but with a disadvantage that it uses 1-group group constant library and cannot describe a 3-dimensional geometric structure. Furthermore, it needs to generate a new 1-group group constant library in order for it to solve a problem for the user’s intention, if the problem is not a general reactor such as PWR or CANDU reactor. On the other hand, the CINDER90 code used in the MCNP-CINDER system can describe 3,400 nuclides and 3-dimensional geometric structure. The CINDER90 code also uses 63-group group constant libraries so the user does not have to separately prepare the library for a particular problem before solving the problem. Therefore, the present study used the MCNP-CINDER code to carry out the evaluation of the radioactive inventory in the concrete walls.
Through the evaluation of the radioactive inventory in the concrete walls, nuclides with long half-life and high radioactivity (41Ca, 39Ar, 36Cl, 40K, 14C) were selected as the main nuclides. To design a shieling pad that can reduce activation of the concrete, the conventional shielding materials, concrete, asphalt, B4C, stainless steel, paraffin, polyethylene, and silicon carbide were compared for their shielding performance. The comparison result showed that stainless steel is most effective for reducing 41Ca, 36Cl, 40K, 14C, while asphalt was most effective for reducing 39A.
