Due to entry of an aging society, u-Health services began to attract attention and researches for health care monitoring have been actively conducting. I compared related researches and implemented the overall system composed of a piezoelectric sensor, the controller for a sensor interface, and a classifier for motion pattern recognition. I focused on four motions on the bed, that is, getting-up, lying-down, and tossing and turning by a normal person, and getting-up by a stroke patient. In order to build the system, I installed a piezoelectric sensor with a wide and thin film, and collected the signal from the sensor. I implemented the controller board mounted ARM7 micro-controller with the ADC(Analog Digital Converter). The controller has the op-amp circuit designed for 7 times amplification of the tiny signals of the sensor and include a transceiver that transmits quantized data to a PC. The PC application program for receiving data from the controller, displaying and analyzing data, writing to a file has been developed. To measure the motions, six subjects participated the experiment. They conducted four motions on the medical bed installed with a piezoelectric sensor under the mattress. The signals from the sensor have been collecting and analyzing. According to the collected data, waveform of each motions showed different shape and amplitude of the sine wave. The total amount of 160 motion data samples in groups of 40 were obtained. The pattern recognition process was carried out by the MATLAB. At first, collected sample data went through preprocessing such as smoothing filtering and extraction of motion period. Then samples in the time-domain were converted to the frequency-domain through FFT. Each motions were classified into four classes. I selected randomly 35 training data and 5 test data from 40 samples of each motion, and reduced the dimension of the feature vector by selecting the most discerning feature within the feature vector in order to maximize the recognition rate while reducing computational complexity of the classifier. The k-NN classifier was used to classify motion patterns and search parameters. The high recognition rate was achieved by repeating the experiments several times. The recognition rate of 89.38% showed that it's possible to distinguish each motions on a bed by using one piezoelectric sensor. This thesis is expected to contribute to advance of u-Health services. In the future, it will be helpful in taking care of the elderly and chronic patients especially.
