Abstract
A Comparative Study on Educational Institutions for Musically Gifted
Students in Korea and Foreign Countries
Han, Sung Min
Major in Music Education
Sangmyung University
Graduate School of Education
This study purposed to make a comparative analysis of educational institutions for
musically gifted students operated under the support of the government and local selfgoverning
bodies in Korea and foreign countries, and ultimately to make strategies
for efficient education of musically gifted students in Korea.
Before comparative analysis, this study reviewed the concept, screening, and
necessity of musically gifted students and operation systems for the education of
musically gifted students in Korea and foreign countries.
The subjects of this study were three foreign institutions Yehudi Menuhin School in
the U.K., and South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities, and
Kaufman Music School in the U.S., and three Korean institutions including Korea
National Institute for the Gifted in Arts (KNIGA), University of Suwon Music
Academy, and Konkuk University Young Musicians Academy, and they were
compared in terms of educational goal, screening process, and curriculum.
The results of this comparative study on educational institutions for musically gifted
students in Korea and foreign countries are as follows.
First, different from the three foreign institutions, the Korean educational institutions
for musically gifted students set the goals of education reflecting various concepts of the gifted including potential and creativity.
Second, the screening process of Yehudi Menuhin School in the U.K., distinguished
from that of other institutions, extended the candidates to gifted students of all
nationalities throughout the world and examined diverse characteristics of gifted
students through multi‐layered screening. In Korea as well, Konkuk Young Musicians
Academy applied various screening methods including cognitive assessment and
aptitude test. As to the age of selected students, Kaufman Music School in the U.S.
included preschool children, but the other institutions selected elementary to high
school students. According to the results of comparing fields of study, Korean
institutions commonly included composition, piano, strings and woodwinds, and
Konkuk Young Musicians Academy additionally included vocal and ‘Future Gifted,’
and University of Suwon Music Academy of the Gifted included vocal and
conducting. In contrast, Yehudi Menuhin School limited the areas to strings, piano,
and guitar, and Kaufman Music School in the U.S. limited to piano and orchestral
music.
Third, as to curriculum, both the Korean and foreign institutions offered music
major courses and practical lessons regularly in parallel. However, Konkuk University
Young Musicians Academy in Korea, Yehudi Menuhin School in the U.K., and South
Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities in the U.S. were providing
diverse programs in consideration of personality, creativity, or potential in addition to
music courses for specialty.
The comparative analysis of musical education institutions in this study is expected
to contribute to planning efficient and systematic operation of education for musically
gifted students in Korea.
