In the late 19th century, the discourse of the crisis and reform of drama plays were constantly addressed with the human existence that got gradually uncertain and vague within the complicated and diversified social structure along with the development of image media, which are advantageous due to their ability to extend expressive domains and be copied by technology. In turn, by the late 20thcentury, the existing concepts of time and space were totally changed and people came to have greatly changed ways of perception due to the advent of the digital media era, which began in earnest then, and in a torrent of Simulacre. It was meaningless to differentiate the reality and the virtuality, and in such a flow of changes in society and media, the ‘play as a reconstruction focused on drama,’ which had had absolute power for hundreds of years, came to encounter its complete limitation. With this background, Western actors kept on engaging themselves in reflections and experiments on the existential purposes and functions of the play while keeping pace with the development of humanities and sociology from the late 19thcentury. Their will of reform was inherited by the Historic Avant-Gardes, which is focused on the perception by new audiences as well as experiments about communicative methods, and then the Neo-Avant-Gardes movement, whichsucceeded and further developed the spirit of reform, against the tradition of the drama-based realist or illusionist plays. The philosophical and aesthetic characteristics inherent to such play movements and subsequent diverse theatre experiments were defined by Andrzej Wirth, a professor in dramatics at Giessen University, with the term ‘Post-dramatic theatre’ for the first time. Then, as more systematic work and theory were established by Hans-Thies Lehmann in his book Postdramatisches Theatre (1999), it found its place as an enormous topic in the modern performing art aesthetics. Based on this, incessant discussion and experiments have been going on so far in the Western world of theatre with respect to post-dramatic theatre aesthetics and its practices. The post-dramatic theatre, putting more weight ‘on the presence than on the reconstruction, on sharing than on transmission of experiences, on processes than on results, on manifestation than on signification, and on energy dynamics than on information,’sees a performance as a process rather than as a complete work, and has some philosophical implications in which it tries to provide audiences with more extended thinking via its stress on performance. This rising of the post-dramatic theatre aesthetics is not a phenomenon of superfluity but a survival plan for maintaining the life of the play in the period in which digital media abound, and in fact, there has been active practical discussion about its efficacy via continuous creation of performances that reflect such a tendency in advanced countries of performing arts. Despite the fact that the concept of post-dramatic theatre occupies an important position in considering future directions of the modern play as such, it is deplorable that a considerable number of domestic performing arts yet remain in the form of creation focused on narratives and reconstructions without being able to some visible interfaces among new aesthetics, creation of realities, and communication with audiences. Thus, the current researcher has been engaged in the study on in what ways and in what processes the post-dramatic theatre aesthetics and techniques can be applied within drama texts and on what effective values they can ultimately have in communication between creators and audiences, by generally approaching the post-dramatic theatre aesthetics and moreover, by taking a detailed look at processes of performance and directing in based on that theory. This study consists of 4 chapters. Chapter 2 takes introduces the theoretical background of the post-dramatic theatre by taking a look at its history, concept, and characteristics. As for the history and concept of the post-dramatic theatre, the chapter shows for what demands and backgrounds the theory was born and in what mutual relations with Avant-Gardes plays, postmodernist philosophy etc., which forms conceptual levels the theory is. With respect to the characteristics of the post-dramatic theatre, the chapter addresses the core concept ‘performance’along with the modal characteristics of the theory. In terms of this, the chapter tries to introduce diverse theoretical levels that comprise the semantic networks of the concept of post-dramatic theatre on one hand, and to show the rationale for why such aesthetic problems should be raised. In turn, based on the theoretical backgrounds presented in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 takes a look at the processes of actual performance and directing in , an official entry work at the 5th Seoul Creative Space Theatrical Festival by analyzing and restructuring its texts, and considering the courses of the actors’training and acting creation, and directing creation. First, analyzing and restructuring the texts, the chapter presents examples of adapted texts so that concise text analysis processes and performance strategies for post-dramatic plays are revealed. As for actors’training courses, the chapter introduces a series of training methods and their executive processes such as warming-up, awakening senses, the Suzuki method, and the viewpoint training, which are thought to be helpful for post-dramatic acting creation. As for the course of acting creation, the chapter introduces the aesthetic characteristics and applications of the ‘self-story’ narration, an important topic in post-dramatic theatre acting, and examples of the concept and applications of performance image. With respect to the course of directing creation, the chapter accounts for the concept of emphasis on performance and materiality, takes a look at examples of its application
