Analysis on the Growing Environment of Euryale ferox Salisb. Habitats - Focusing on Jeollabuk-do -
ABSTRACT
Through the research and analysis on the vegetation environment, flora, and hydrological environment of water temperature, depth, and quality and soil environment of habitats through documentary and field studies over 14 habitats of Euryale ferox Salisb. within Jeollabukdo, with the objective of acquiring the basic data for forming an environment based on plantation of reservoirs that are composed with Euryale ferox, the following results were obtained.
1. As a result of analyzing the construction period of the habitats of Euryale ferox from a total of 14 places, the place that was constructed earliest appeared to be Hanseongji at Jeongeup, which was formed in 1897, now being 117 years old. On the other hand, the place most recently constructed appeared to be Gungdong Reservoir at Gochang, which was constructed 40 years ago, and the average period of duration after construction of all subject reservoirs appeared to be 71.8 years. Moreover, when examining the relationship between the age of reservoirs and eutrophication, it could be judged that at least the eutrophication of subsoil and water environment is not an obstacle to the growth of Euryale ferox, and that Euryale ferox grows in habitats that have a reservoir age of approximately 70 years or more.
2. As a result of analyzing the grading of soil sediment of the Euryale ferox habitats, the component ingredients appeared to be composed of 80.2% of clay, 16.7% of silt, and 3.1% of sand, and the soil class pursuant to such was classified as 'heavy clay'.
3. The organic matter contents of soil sediment appeared to be an average of 36g/kg, and there appeared to be no noticeable difference between the habitats and non-habitats of Euryale ferox. The average concentration of the gross nitrogen and phosphorus, the indices of eutrophication, appeared to be respectively 0.32% and 39.6 mg/kg, which is a higher value compared to preceding studies, thus, it was confirmed that the growth of Euryale ferox is generally active where nutrient salt is abundant.
4. The average water depth of the natural habitats from May to June, which is the sprouting period of Euryale ferox, appeared to be 44.6~75.4cm. In particular, the entire average water depth of June, the month exhibiting a temperature of 24℃, the optimal temperature for sprouting, was within the scope of 30~60cm, which falls within the scope of the existing theory stating the depth as 50cm. On the other hand, the water depth during July and August, which is the growth peak period and flowering period, showed severe deviation between 30~203cm, and the average water depth was researched to be respectively 84.7cm and 130cm. Both the average water temperature and air temperature of July, the growth peak period, appeared to be 27℃, however, the average water temperature of August appeared to be 25℃, which was 2℃ higher than air temperature. On the other hand, the average water temperature of September, which is the flowering period, appeared to be 21℃, and the average air temperature appeared to be 19.5℃, which was 1.5℃ higher than the water temperature. Consequently, it can be concluded that maintaining a water temperature of around 24℃ and a water depth of 60cm or less is required during the sprouting period of Euryale ferox, which seems as a necessary item for formation of environment for Euryale ferox for each period.
5. The water quality environment of Euryale ferox habitat appeared to be pH 6.5~7.9, concentration of dissolved oxygen to be 1.8∼8.8mg/ℓ, concentration of COD to be 6.8∼74mg/ℓ, floating materials to be 2.0∼213mg/ℓ, gross nitrogen to be 0.422∼10.723mg/ℓ, and phosphate to be 0.003∼0.126mg/ℓ. The average DO concentration of Aedang Reservoir at Jeongeup, Daejeong Reservoir at Imsil, and Myeongdeokji at Gimje with high vitality and green coverage ratio of Euryale ferox appeared to be 3.5mg/ℓ, gross nitrogen to be 1.33mg/ℓ, and concentration of phosphorate-phosphorus to be 0.061mg/ℓ. When comparing such with the entire average value, the DO and gross nitrogen concentration appeared to be rather low, and the phosphorate-phosphorus concentration appeared to be higher by two times or more, thus, an in-depth study on the correlation of the vitality of Euryale ferox and concentration of phosphorate-phosphorus will be needed in the future.
6. The entire flora of the 14 habitats appeared to be 79 families, 211 genus, 298 species, two subspecies, 30 varieties, and six forma, thus, a total of 336 taxa was confirmed. Among these, emergent water plants appeared to compose 17 taxa, floating-leaved plants to compose seven taxa including Euryale ferox floating plants to compose five taxa, and submerged water plants to compose two taxa. As a result of analyzing the similarity only over the water plants, Hanseongji and Seoknam Reservoir showed the highest similarity rate of 45.83%, and following these places, the similarity rate between Yanggok Reservoir and Seoknam Reservoir and between Seoknam Reservoir and Danghaji appeared as 39.13%, and the similarity rate between Gungdong Reservoir and Seoknam Reservoir and that between Myeongdeokji and Danghaji each appeared to be 36.36%. The lowest similarity rate appeared between Gamdong Reservoir and Aedang Reservoir, as the similarity rate between the two regions appeared to be 0% as a result of the analysis. Floating-leaved plants, lotuses and caltrops, appeared to be equally inhabiting in Hanseongji at Jeongeup and Seoknam Reservoir at Gochang, which showed the highest similarity rate, in addition to Euryale ferox.
7. When examining the appearance frequency of aquatic plants per growth type, Actinostemma lobatum and Phragmites communis, in addition to Euryale ferox each appeared 11 times, showing a high frequency of 78.6%, and Trapa japonica, which is a floating-leaved water plant, appeared ten times(71.4%), and Zizania latifolia appeared eight times(57.1%). In addition, the appearance rate appeared to be high in the order of Persicaria thunbergii, Leersia sayanuka, Ceratophyllum demersum, Echinochloa crusgalli var. oryzicola, Scirpus maritimus, and Nelumbo nucifera.
8. The rare plants discovered in the Euryale ferox habitats pursuant to the IUCN evaluation standards was confirmed to be composed of five taxa, with three taxa including the least concerned species(LC), Melothria japonica at Yanggok Reservoir, Hydrocharis dubia at Myeongdeokji, and Ottelia alismoides at Daewi Reservoir, in addition to vulnerable species(VU), Utricularia vulgaris at Sangpyeong Reservoir, along with Euryale ferox. On the other hand, the naturalization rate within the entire Euryale ferox habitats was analyzed to be 17.9% among the 312 taxa of vascular plants. In particular, Paspalum distichum var. indutum appeared to have an extremely huge power, to be also classified as a composition species of the vegetation community, thus, demands special management.
9. Most of the group or community types of the natural habitats of Euryale ferox appeared to be the Euryale ferox community,’ and the Daewi Reservoir of Gunsan was defined as Trapa japonica + Euryale ferox + Nymphoides indica community. The green coverage ratio of Euryale ferox per natural habitat showed a considerably huge deviation from 0.03 to 36.50, and as the average green coverage ratio was appropriated at 9.8, as the standard deviation is large, it seems like statistically nonsignificant.
10. The largest dominant community per habitat showed that the caltrop community prevailed in Jecheon Bank and Wang Reservoir, and at Yukri Reservoir and Gungdong Reservoir, the Zizania latifolia community prevailed, in Yongdae Reservoir, Hanseongji, and Daewi Reservoir, the Nelumbo nucifera community prevailed, and in Aedang Reservoir, Yanggok Reservoir, and Sangpyeong Reservoir, the Leersia japnica community especially prevailed. In particular, in Sangpyeong Reservoir, Leersia japnica, along with Paspalum distichum var. indutum, a naturalized plant, was predominantly distributed. On the other hand, the vegetation community nearby the natural habitats of Euryale ferox per research subject area appeared to be composed of three Leersia japonica communities, two communities each for Zizania latifolia community and Trapa japonica community, and one community each for Nelumbo nucifera community, Nymphoides peltata + Typha orientalis community, Trapa japonica + Nelumbo nucifera community, Hydrocharis dubia community, Leersia japnica + Paspalum distichum var. indutum community, and Euryale ferox + Trapa japonica community, showing a slight difference depending on the location conditions of each reservoir. Thus, this result may be suggested as a guideline to apply when allocating the vegetation ratio and the types of floating-leaved plants upon planting plants in reservoirs with Euryale ferox as the main component species.
