The research theme of this thesis is the understanding of
spirituality through holy pictures. A holy picture is basically a work of man, so its significance lies in leading people to biblical truth for their journey of salvation. For this reason, it is necessary to understand holy pictures as 'spiritual' art rather than just 'religious' art. From this viewpoint, this research recognized Caravaggio's works as holy pictures and analyzed the spiritual conversion and spiritual maturation process revealed
through them, aiming at providing a foundation for understanding
spirituality of Christian holy pictures.
Most of early researches on Caravaggio concerned his private life. Whereas this research involves the reinterpretation of his
works as holy pictures; the description of relationship between their themes and spirituality; and ultimately an attempt to reinterpret the spirituality, or faith, reflected in holy pictures. To achieve the objective of this research, 3 major approaches were made as follows:
First, historical method was used to investigate how discussions about the issues of holy pictures and spirituality have so far been
developed in the history of Christianity. Investigation was also made concerning the relation between the historical situation during Caravaggio's lifetime and his life, as well as concerning the changes in the nature of his works.
Second, analytical method of spiritual theology was applied, thus extending the scope of this research beyond artistic expression technique. Based on iconological interpretation methodology, an
effort was made to find out Caravaggio's intention he desired to express through icons in the holy pictures, as well as his faith and spirituality reflected in them.
Third, personal visit was made to churches where Caravaggio's works were used for decoration, appreciating them with careful observation and contemplation. Thus this research could be based
on a richer and clearer understanding of the holy pictures
obtained through the experience of directly watching them as they revealed the light of the gospel 'now and here.'
The composition of this thesis is as follows. Research was
conducted in a stepwise manner in this order.
First, Chapter Ⅱ investigated difference between Christian art and common art; as well as the concept of holy pictures, the origin and progresses of holy pictures, the purposes and roles of
holy pictures, and also the contents and objects of holy pictures as their characteristics.
Second, Chapter Ⅲ made an attempt to understand the
environment of Caravaggio's life, the social background of the period he actively worked in, and his private life. In response to the need of the time, Caravaggio enthusiastically expressed the
teachings of the Church, conveying spiritual inspiration through the pictures in his unique style, with the bold and energetic movement of the brush and strong contrast.
Third, Chapter Ⅳ discussed about the spirituality and
Caravaggio's spiritual changes reflected in some selected works of his. Through the holy pictures he proposed biblical prospect of salvation, the ultimate goal a human being must attain. Fourth, based on the definition and methodology of spirituality
regarding holy pictures, Chapter Ⅴ analyzed correlation between holy pictures and spirituality as well as the nature of the spirituality reflected in holy pictures. In addition, theory and methodology for analyzing the spirituality reflected in artistic works were proposed.
In conclusion, through holy pictures, particularly the works of Caravaggio, it was possible to understand biblical truth that leads to salvation in this extremely secularized world. His works have his unique style of reflecting his self-image or his inner world in the appearances of Christ or saints. This is considered to show
his intention to proclaim through the holy pictures the powerful message that Christ saves every sinner who repents, regardless of how great their sins are. In addition, his methodology proposes
that artistic works should seek what is holy in secular situations. This is the very intrinsic motivation that made the author begin this research. In the meantime, the author's academic motivation
is to make achievements that can contribute to understanding the spirituality reflected in holy pictures, and to establishing a systemized research methodology.
