In this study, the occurrence and removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in six wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in Korea were investigated to understand their distribution and fate through the plants. The WWTPs in industrial complex, urban area or rural area were selected for the sampling campaigns. Influent, secondary effluent, coagulation processed water and final effluent of each WWTP were sampled six times in January through September, 2014. Targets of PPCPs and EDCs included atenolol, ibuprofen, gemfibrozil, estradiol, etc. Basically those PPCPs were analyzed by liquid chromatograph mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS), and EDCs were analyzed by gas chromatograph mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry (GC/MS/MS). Concentrations of the monitored chemicals in WWTP A, WWTP B, WWTP C (industrial complex and urban area) were relatively higher compared with other WWTPs. Conventional activated sludge processes could remove some of the PPCPs, possibly by biodegradation. However, others such as benzophenone, benzotriazole, carbamazepine, primidone were not readily removed through the biological processes. Per the results of this study, continuous monitoring and management of those PPCPs and EDCs are necessary to improve water quality of raw water to downstream drinking water plants.
