Pharmaceuticals are used for prevention or treatment of disease for human health. Industrial pharmaceutical wastewater include high CODcr, plenty of non-biodegradable organic matter, and great amounts of compounds persistent to biodegradation. Biological treatment well applied at the wastewater treatment plant. However, due to the limited efficiency to certain PPCPs, several advanced processes such as oxidation and adsorption are considered as pretreatment or post-treatment. Ozone oxidation has shown effectiveness to remove PPCPs. Little research has been done to investigate the changes of BOD5 / CODcr ratio during ozonation. This study examined the fraction changes of biodegradability during ozonation in addition to removal efficiencies of five pharmaceuticals. The increasing ozone concentration contributed to decline UV254, BOD and COD values. The concentration of 5mg/L of ozone was effective in removing individual PPCP and improving the BOD5 / CODcr ratio. With the ozone dose of 5mg/L, more than 98% of the removal were achieved for the PPCPs except for the case of Ibuprofen, which was removed by 69.0%. The batch tests for biological treatment were conducted. The increasing operation duration contributed to improve BOD5 / CODcr ratio and individual PPCP removal except for the case of carbamazepine, which remoed only 31.4%. The result from biological treatment combined with ozone pretreatment showed that BOD5 / CODcr ratio and individual PPCP removal were improved while increaseing treatment duration. On the other hand, carbamazepine was not effectively degraded. It is similar to the result of biological treatment. Ozone concentration is an important design parameter that has to be optimized to effectively remove the PPCP. And some PPCPs were not degraded during the biological treatment. Thus, pretreatment process such as ozonation must be used along with the biological treatment.
