The particulate matter (PM) emitted from diesel vehicles is regulated by a gravimetric method of collecting vehicle exhaust in filters; however, the unit gravimetric method is limited when number concentration since more than 90% of PM consists of Nano-particles with 3–30 nm diameters. In addition, PM is harmful to human health, as these carcinogenic and mutable substances are adsorbed through particle`s surface. These particles, which mostly consist of Nano-particles, are known to deeply penetrate alveoli in the lungs. In this study, to confirm the emission characteristics of Nano-particles, a comparative analysis was performed using regulated emissions(CO, THC, NOx, and PM) with a Condensation Particle Counter(CPC). A CPC is a particle counting device recommended by the Particle Measurement Programme(PMP) for vehicles corresponding to EURO 4 and EURO 5 emissions standards, which are allowed for diesel vehicles. An Engine Exhaust Particle Sizer(EEPS), which can measure particle distribution, was also used, and focus was placed on establishing correlations between regulated emissions and Nano-particles. The number of Nano-particles and the particle size distribution were measured under various driving conditions, including cold start, low speed, medium speed, and high speed, while driving in WHVC, which is an international mode, and NIER, which is a South Korean mode. The regulated substances and Nano-particles were measured specifically with vehicles mounted with p-DPF and Urea-SCR, which are aftertreatment system. Results of the WHVC experiment showed decreased NOx and number of particles, but increased PM, for the vehicle of EURO 5 compared to the vehicle of EURO 4. For all regulated vehicles in the NIER mode, as vehicle speeds increased, the PM and number of particles decreased, but the emission of 100nm or smaller particles increased. The p-DPF mounted vehicle had an initial nuclei mode particle emission twice as high at maximum in the cold start experiment compared to that of the hot start experiment; and for the SCR-mounted vehicle, the emission of Nano-particles doubled at maximum across all regions compared to the hot start experiment. Theresults of these study experiments can be used as basic data for Nano-particles emissions from medium-duty truck in the future.
