The purpose of this study is to devise and suggest a plan to improve the planting structure as a way to enhance the scenery in Seokchon Lake and its neighboring Songpanaru Park by evaluating plant landscape and analyzing the planting structure. The distribution of plant species including semi-tree and tree strata have been identified in Songpanaru park, along with their land area and proportion depending on plant species. The total number of plant species herein stands at 44 including 21 indigenous and 23 foreign ones. The indigenous and foreign species are disturbed in a similar ratio as 26.03% and 25.42% respectively. However, the distribution of broadleaf trees (34.94%) is more than twice than coniferous trees (16.51%) in terms of their types and distributed areas. Throughout the part, there are four main plant types namely Prunus yedoensis (15,854.67㎡, 14.44%), Pinus dendiflora (8,416.15㎡, 7.66%), Zelkova serrata (7,588.63㎡, 6.91%), Ginkgo biloba (4,476.86㎡, 4.08%), and these four take 33.09% out of the total. The landscape viewpoints have been selected after walking along a trail. Areas that are considered highly pubic, heavily or frequently visited, favorable to enjoy the view or highly likely to be frequently visited in the future are chosen including four for the east lake and five for the west lake. In addition, landscape units that have clearly less visibility of the scenery have been distinguished as a section that hinders the view of landscape. With visual area of 12,683.93㎡, East Lake A is home to Pinus dendiflora, Pinus koraiensis S. and Ginkgo biloba. East Lake B has a visual area of 4,416.31㎡ and mainly, Pinus dendiflora and Pinus koraiensis are planted. Pinus dendiflora are the main plant for East Lake C with 13,443.88㎡ visual area. Pinus dendiflora and Prunus yedoensis are flagship plants for East Lake D with a visual area of 8,406.56㎡. As for West Lake A with 10,836.44㎡ visual area, Pinus dendiflora and Pinus koraiensis S. are major trees. West Lake B has a visual area of 11,455.76㎡ and is home to Ginkgo biloba. In West Lake C with a visual area of 5,297.89㎡, mostly Zelkova serrata and Celtis sinensis Pers. are planted. West Lake D and F have Metasequoia glyptostroboides as the primary plant in a visual area of 13,606.05㎡ and 6,396.85㎡ respectively. Zelkova serrata and Ailanthus altissima are main plants in West Lake E with a visual area of 14,953.20㎡. Last but not least, Pinus strobus and Prunus yedoensis are planted in the section that hinders the view of the west lake. Assessment on planting landscape has been conducted in two forms: qualitative and quantitative evaluations. For qualitative evaluation, assessment items such as harmonious unity, balance and symmetry out of esthetic principles from a book written by Seungbin Iim (1991) have been reconstructed to fit the area to create a framework for evaluation on plant landscape and describe its characteristics. The planting landscape is assessed in fields like harmonious and unified colors and tree types and sky lines to mark 15 points in total which can be converted into 100 scores. Results of qualitative evaluation show that sections with high scores in terms of landscape unity are East Lake A (73 points), East Lake B and D, West Lake A and F (60 points). Meanwhile, the quantitative evaluation reveals that East Lake A has a patch unit area of 381.82㎡, landscape unity index of 0.856 and landscape diversity index of 1.132 while East Lake B with a patch unit area of 265.33㎡, landscape unity index of 0.842, and diversity index of 0.990; East Lake C with a patch unit area of 502.13㎡, landscape unity index of 0.831 and diversity index of 0.977; East Lake D with a patch unit area of 300.47㎡, landscape unity index of 0.852 and diversity index of 0.887; West Lake A with a patch unit area of 291.07㎡, landscape unity index of 0.847 and diversity index of 1.153; West Lake B with a patch unit area of 245.07㎡, landscape unity index of 0.842 and diversity index of 0.990; West Lake C with a patch unit area of 211.24㎡, landscape unity index of 0.969 and diversity index of 0.969; West Lake D with a patch unit area of 269.29㎡, landscape unity index of 0.874 and diversity index of 1.174; West Lake E with a patch unit area of 480.6㎡, landscape unity index of 0.825 and diversity index of 1.073; and West Lake F with a patch unit area of 306.75㎡, landscape unity index of 0.910 and diversity index of 1.096. The section that hinders the view of the west lake has a patch unit area of 99.17㎡, landscape unity index of 0.898 and the diversity index of 0.969. Sections with high landscape unity are five with a patch unit area of 99.17 to 502.13 ㎡, landscape unity index of 0.825 to 0.969 and the diversity index of 0.945 to 1.153. An improvement method for planting structure is suggested based on qualitative and quantitative evaluations. The qualitative evaluation shows that improvement is needed for sections like East Lake C and West Lake B, C, D and E. The section that hinders the view of the west lake is ruled out. As for quantitative evaluation, it turns out that all sections have to be improved. The planting landscape has been improved by focusing on the same characteristics of plant species to bring better scenery and structure for planting. Improvement has been made to 29 plant patches in 13 species including Pinus strobus, Taxus cuspidata S. and Cornus officinalis and 124 crowded trees in 20 species on East Lake A; to eight patches in six species including Pinus dendiflora, Ginkgo biloba and Acer palmatum and 87 crowded tress in 14 species on East Lake B; to 20 patches in six species including Pinus dendiflora, Pinus koraiensis, Zelkova serrata and Cornus kousa and 105 crowded trees in 12 species to connect the sky line on East Lake C; to four patches in three species such as Ginkgo biloba, Pinus koraiensis and Eastern Platanus occidentalis and 89 trees in seven species on East Lake D; to 19 patches in 14 species including Juniperus chinensis, Chionanthus retusus, and Syringa dilatata and 77 crowded trees in 18 species on West Lake A; to 12 patches in ten species including pine trees, Pinus strobus, Chionanthus retusus, and Syringa dilatata and 60 crowded trees in 16 species to connect the sky line on West Lake B; to nine patches in five species including Syringa dilatata, Sophora japonica, Pinus koraiensis and Diospyros kaki and 40 crowded tree in 11 species to connect the sky line on West Lake C; to 19 patches in 13 species including Acer palmatum, Pinus koraiensis, Juniperus chinensis and Cornus officinalis and 134 crowded trees in 19 species to connect the sky line on West Lake D; to 21 patches in ten species including Acer palmatum, Pinus koraiensis, Juniperus chinensis and Albizia julibrissin and 148 crowded trees in 26 species to connect the sky line on West Lake E; to six patches in three species such as Pinus koraiensis, Juniperus chinensis and Aesculus turbinata and 56 crowded trees in 15 species on West Lake F, and to twelve patches in eight species including Pinus koraiensis, Juniperus chinensis and Pinus strobus and 52 crowded trees in eleven species on the section that hinders the landscape of the west lake. Thanks to the improvement efforts, the score of the qualitative evaluation have reached somewhere between 60 to 73 points while the patch unit area is from 297.5 to 1,002.27㎡ and the landscape unity and diversity indexes stand at from 0.635 to 0.979 and 0.589 to 0.98 respectively, resulting in more unified scenery. Thus, the assessment shows that the higher landscape diversity index, the more crowded landscape. How crowded the landscape is can be inferred from landscape diversity index, which means the diversity index can be used as landscape crowdedness index to determine the level of crowdedness in terms of landscape. To promote variety in terms of planting structure, common reeds have been planted on the lakeshore while Rhododendron schlippenbachii on a green slope of the west lake, East Lake A and C, West Lake D; Liriope platyphylla on East Lake B; Rosa hybrida on East lake D, West Lake A and B; Paeonia suffruticosa on West Lake C; Hydrangea macrophylla on West Lake E; Euonymus alatus on West Lake F and Rosa hybrida on the section that hinders the view of the west lake. This study suggests improvement methods in a detail from the perspective of planting landscape and structure by conducting both qualitative and quantitative analysis (patch unit area, landscape unity index and landscape diversity index) on planting landscape to ensure more objectivity and analyzing characteristics of planting structure.
