Catalysts used for this method include Pt, V2O5-Al2O3, CuO-Al2O3, WO3-TiO2, V2O5-SiO2-TiO2, Fe2O3-TiO2, and CuO-TiO2, and the main zeolite catalysts being used are Y-Zeolite, Mordenite, and ZSM-5. However, the existing catalysts are economically infeasible for practical applications because of their high cost, and when sulfur is included, filters or desulfurization equipment should be installed. In addition, because the temperature of exhaust gas is low, between 150℃ and 250℃, more studies are being conducted to develop low-priced catalysts that are active at low temperature. Hence, in this study, low-priced catalysts were developed, and a NOx reduction experiment was performed by applying catalysts that are active at low temperature to the SCR process. In this experiment, natural zeolite, waste FCC, and biochar catalysts, which are drawing attention as low-priced catalysts, were used, and the NOx removal efficiency of the bio-char catalyst increased through catalyst activation. Moreover, manganese oxide, which shows excellent NOx removal efficiency at low temperature, was used as an active substance in order to increase the efficiency of the low-priced catalysts. Natural zeolite has the advantage of being inexpensive and easily available. Comparison of natural zeolite to natural zeolite comprising manganese showed that the specific surface area tended to decrease in the latter, but increased when the manganese content was 15 wt%, and that the structure of natural zeolite was well-maintained until the manganese content was 10 wt%. By performing a NOx reduction experiment using the SCR apparatus, it was confirmed that natural zeolite comprising manganese was more efficient in reducing NOx than natural zeolite. It was also found that NOx removal efficiency were most pronounced when the manganese content was 10 wt%, and that the efficiency began to decrease when the manganese content was 15 wt%. As for the FCC catalyst, a catalyst that had been discarded after being used was applied to the SCR method. The spent FCC catalyst consisted of six main substances—Fe, Mn, Ti, V, Ni, and Ce—and among them, the Mn content was the highest. The spent FCC catalyst that comprised manganese oxide after firing was used, and it was found that the amount of adsorbed ammonia increased until the manganese content was 20 wt%, then decreased at 30 wt%. It was verified that when 20 wt% manganese oxide was included, Mn3+ was dominantly formed. The result of performing the NOx reduction experiment using the spent FCC catalyst indicated that the spent FCC catalyst comprising 20 wt% manganese content exhibited excellent NOx removal efficiency. The fact that strong ammonia adsorptivity and dominant formation of Mn3+ are found in the spent FCC catalyst comprising 20 wt% manganese oxide confirms that this catalyst is highly efficient for reducing NOx. When biomass is pyrolyzed, biochar is generated as a byproduct. The NOx reduction effects were improved by increasing the specific surface area and adjusting the chemical composition of the char surface through physical and chemical treatment.
