Complaints on odors from various sources including wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) or animal feeding operations from communities in Korea have increased to 13,103 cases in 2013 with an annual growth rate of 14%. It is because more WWTPs and animal farms were built near residential area following the growth of population. Therefore, odor issues are attract attention from engineers and operators of wastewater treatment systems. To control odor-causing compounds in WWTPs, it is important to know the odor emission quantity particularly with continuous monitoring. Since modified activated sludge processes always include anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic conditions for nutrient removal (i.e., nitrogen and phosphate), odor emission from these different environmental settings is expected. The main odorants from WWTPs or animal farms are volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), methyl mercaptan (CH3SH), and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) from anaerobic biodegradation of sulfur-containing compounds. In this study, continuous monitoring of VSCs from the headspace of an alternating aerobic and anoxic (AAA) activated sludge process via total reduced sulfur (TRS) analyzer was performed. There is a clear pattern of the initial TRS peak immediately after the initiation of the aeration in the AAA system and TRS concentration begins to drop and shows pattern of plat-out through the remaining air-on cycle. On the other hand, during the air-off period, TRS emission was different from air-on period. Under anoxic condition VSCs formation was low due to oxidation/reduction condition of AAA system effected on the NO3- or NO2-. After completed removal of NO3- and NO2-, sulfur compounds in the organic compounds and sulfate in the influent were reduced to H2S, CH3SH, etc. This result was inferred the increase of TRS emission of headspace with time after complete removal of NO3- during air-off period. The impact of the addition of dimethyl sulfoxide on TRS emission and specifically the formation of DMS was observed. From the result of VSCs emission characteristics of AAA system, since the highest odor emission occurs after the initiation of aeration, the future control of exhausted air should only deal with air collected during the initial 30 min aeration period. Like the cases of odors from WWTPs, the concerns about odor emission have been increasing at livestock farms or manure storage. Therefore, farmers apply chemical or biological additives to prevent odors from generating feeding houses or manure treatment facilities. In this study, four commercially available microbial additives designed to control NH3 and odor emissions due to reducing sulfur compounds and fatty acid were applied to swine slurries stored in containers and their effectiveness in odor reduction was statistically evaluated. Nineteen different odorous gases in the headspace of each container were analyzed to calculate an overall odor index for slurries treated with different microbial additives over time. Of the four microbial additives tested in this study, only two were effective in reducing the odors from the swine slurry. After a 80-d storage period, the odor indexes of the slurries could be reduced by over 70% with 50% reduction in volatile fatty acids. In addition, a significant reduction of E. coli. could be achieved within 60 d. The other two microbial additives did not affect the odor characteristics of swine slurries under storage; their time profiles were statistically identical with that of the control. Since odor emission characteristics of livestock manure storage facilities different site by site, farmers need to choose the most economical and effective odor control technologies after a comprehensive study. In other words, results of this study imply that farmers considering applying microbial additives for controlling odors from swine manure should be careful in choosing an additive.
