The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the long-term group play therapy on child’s sociality development and the improvement of mother-child, teacher-child relationships. The targeted children of this study were a group of four 5-year-old children who attended the same class under the care of the same teacher at the R-daycare center located in Dongjak-gu, Seoul. They were referred to this program by their parents who agreed to their children's participation. The scales used in this study were Child’s Sociality Development Scale, Parent-Child Relationship Inventory(PCRI), Student-Teacher Relationship Scale(STRS), Child Behavior Checklist for Age 1.5-5(CBCL 1.5-5) and Caregiver-Teacher Report Form for Age 1.5-5(C-TRF 1.5-5) as the preliminary test, the post-test and the follow-up test. In addition, this study got information from children with House-Tree-Person Projective Drawing Technique(HTP), Kinetic Family Drawing(KFD) and Sentence Completion test(SCT). The long-term group play therapy program was designed at the parents’ request concerning their children’s problems, and based on pre-tests data and interviews with the parents and teacher. This program targeted the children’s common difficulties in self-expression, peer relationships, and inadequate reaction to social situations. To help the children develop and improve their social skills and relationships, this program used various mediums such as physical activities, art, music, and games to reach the goal. This program lasted a total of 30 sessions, one session per week, 50 minutes per session. This study was to verify the effectiveness of the program from the beginning to the end, especially with subsequent follow-up after the program ended. The results of this study were as follows: First, the long-term group play therapy for social promotion was effective in child’s sociality development. The sub-factors of child’s sociality development such as cooperation, awareness of others, autonomy, and peer interaction all showed improvements through the long-term group play therapy. Second, the long-term group play therapy for social promotion was effective in improving the mother-child relationship. The sub-factors of mother-child relationship such as parenting satisfaction, parent involvement, and discipline improved positively through the long-term group play therapy. Third, the long-term group play therapy for social promotion was effective in improving the teacher-child relationship. The sub-factors of teacher-child relationship such as intimacy, conflict control, and dependency showed positive improvements through the long-term group play therapy. Fourth, through the long-term group play therapy, children have improved positively in self-expression and peer interaction, and conflicts decreased due to the increase of empathy and prosocial behavior toward others. In conclusion, the long-term group play therapy program designed in this study not only has a positive impact on the child’s sociality development directly, but also on the improvement of mother-child and teacher-child relationships indirectly. It was very significant that in this study there was also the follow-up work after the program ended when the four children attended elementary schools after graduating from the R-daycare center. Their elementary school teachers were interviewed and surveyed, and their response again proved the effectiveness of the long-term group play therapy based on the fact that the four children continued to improve in their sociality development and teacher-child relationship.
