The purpose of this study is to understand how Chinese middle school students learn English and western culture from a Christian worldview. I choose five Chinese middle school textbooks, which are used in public school in China to analyze followings. I analyze how the textbooks portray western culture by getting through subjects and the themes of all the units in each textbook. First, I classify the textbooks into several types, such as material culture, behavioral culture, and spiritual culture. Second, I categorize the contents into five cultural backgrounds, such as source culture, target culture, comparative culture, universal culture, and other culture. Third, some details and cultural backgrounds are analyzed from Christian worldview.
The results of this study are listed followings. English textbooks in China classify culture into behavioral, spiritual, and material culture. The portion of the behavioral culture in the text is decreased, while the spiritual portion of culture is increased as students get older. In the textbooks, universal culture comes priority while target culture comes second. Then, source culture, comparative culture, and other cultural aspects are presented. Also, some specific themes are analyzed from Christian worldview, which is based on creativity, vitality, diversity, order, harmony, and Christian ethics.
