A language is an important tool to communicate with others and maintain interpersonal relationships and social life and plays a crucial role in expressing the ideas and values of its users and in revealing themselves. Adolescents' verbal deviance has recently been regarded as a serious social problem. The development of various Internet and broadcast media in the informatization society has positively affected information transfer and exchange but exposed adolescents to unfiltered coarse language, thereby affecting their language culture and language-related living habits negatively. As children began to experience mental stress from excessive competition and early education in a lower grade at elementary school and such a condition may cause adolescents to make verbal expressions of the same words in more negative, aggressive, and impulsive ways than before. As a result, they may communicate distorted emotions to others, make wrong anger expressions and have difficulties in controlling their anger, form a negative self-image and suffer from emotional problems, establish a destructive relationship with others, and commit verbal violence. These problems appear in younger and younger age. For this reason, this study aimed to determine the effects of a positive language guidance program on elementary school children's self-esteem, respectful attitudes to others, and aggression. The hypotheses in this study are as follows: first, there would be significant differences in self-esteem between the experimental group to which a positive language guidance program was applied and the control group; second, there would be significant differences in respectful attitudes to others between the experimental group to which a positive language guidance program was applied and the control group; third, there would be significant differences in aggression between the experimental group to which a positive language guidance program was applied and the control group. To test these hypotheses, 304 fifth-graders were selected from 11 classes of H and Y Elementary Schools in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul; 159 children in 6 classes of H Elementary School constituted the experimental group and 145 in 5 classes of Y Elementary School formed the control group; and the experimental group was provided with a positive language guidance program. Pretest was performed using a scale concerning self-esteem, respectful attitudes to others, and aggression in both the experimental and control groups and the students in the experimental group was provided with the program in a total of 5 sessions―a session per week, two classes (80 minutes) per session, 40 minutes per class―before posttest was carried out in both groups. A total of 270 questionnaires were statistically processed, with the exception of 16 from the experimental group and 18 from the control group due to insincere responses. The data were processed using SPSS/WIN (22.0): one-way ANCOVA were performed in terms of self-esteem, respectful attitudes to others, and aggression to assess the effectiveness of the positive language guidance program; and a qualitative analysis of the contents related to the effectiveness of the program in the reports on satisfaction with the program in each session, which were written by the students in the experimental group, was carried out to make up for limited reliability of the quantitative findings. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, significant differences were found in self-esteem between the experimental group provided with a positive language guidance program and the control group. This result has confirmed that a positive language guidance program may be effective in improving self-esteem of the participants. Second, significant differences were found in the total score for respectful attitudes to others between the experimental group provided with a positive language guidance program and the control group. While no significant difference was found in tolerance or collaboration among the sub-factors of respectful attitudes to others, significant differences were found in position changes, kindness, and respect of opinions. This result has confirmed that a positive language guidance program may have positive effects on improvement of respectful attitudes to others. Third, significant differences were found in the total score for aggression between the experimental group provided with a positive language guidance program and the control group. While no significant difference was found in negation among the sub-factors of aggression, significant differences were found in physical aggression, verbal aggression, indirect aggression, and excitability. This result has confirmed that a positive language guidance program may be effective in reducing aggression among the participants.
