Understanding North Koreans' reception of artworks : based on interviews with the defectors come from North Hamgyeong province원문보기

The purpose of this study is to understand the extent of internalization of the North Korea’s dominant value among North Koreans by exploring the reception of artworks among the defectors in their 40s and early 50s who come from North Hamgyeong Province. This study conducted 14 interviews with the defectors from March until August, 2014. This study assumed that the residents in North Hamgyeong Province could be exposed to other countries’ artworks because of the geographical proximity to China; and as a result, they might show more various attitudes toward North Korea artworks. The defectors in 40s and early 50s had attended elementary school since the establishment of the unitary ideological system of the Party; and so, they had been exposed to artworks depicted the Leader when they were students of elementary and middle school. In addition, the defectors in 40s and early 50s had gone through the Arduous March in the mid 1990s when they were in 20s and early 30s. Those experiences in their lifetime might have influenced the reception of artworks. Based on the interview data, this study found that the interviewees showed the changes in the reception of artworks in the three different periods over their lifetime. The first period appeared between their attendance in elementary school and in middle school, the second from their graduation of middle school until the Arduous March in the mid 1990s, and the last have appeared since the Arduous March. The first type of reception, the dominant-hegemonic decoding occurred among the interviewees when they attended elementary and middle school by receiving directly the ‘preferred meanings’ which was the connotative and denotative meaning inscribed in the artworks(text) and was produced by the unitary ideological system of the Party. For them, the Leader’s life and the revolutionists’ life represented in the artworks were a true fact, and the Leader was the ‘significant others’. When they were students of elementary school and middle school, they tended to internalize the dominant value through the extreme involvement in artworks, such as identification and empathy with the artworks. By doing so, they had gone through the first socialization process. However, from the graduation from the middle school until the mid 1990s, the interviewees took diverse decoding positions; first, the dominant-hegemonic decoding position by accepting the ‘preferred meanings’ and internalizing the dominant value, second, the oppositional decoding position by refusing the ‘preferred meanings’, third, the negotiated decoding position by selectively accepting the ‘preferred meanings’, and lastly the post-encoding position in which the interviewees sought only for fun with neither empathy with artworks nor consideration of meaning of artworks. In doing so, when they were in late teens and 20s, the interviewees showed the various types of socialization, such as the first socialization or re-socialization(alternations) through which the interviewees refused North Korean artworks. Since the Arduous March in the mid 1990s, in contrast, the diverse decoding positions converged to the oppositional decoding position and became homeogenous again among the interviewees. They had to quit appreciating any artworks because they had to focus only on survival, and came to doubt the authority of legitimacy of North Korea’s governing Party. The interviewees’ experiences in China and their exposure to the South Korean films made them become more suspicious. Since the Arduous March in the mid 1990s, most interviewees had tried hard to refuse the contact with North Korean artworks by keeping their distance excessively from the artworks. Their refusal of the contact with North Korean artworks showed the fact that the interviewees came to break themselves from the internalization of the dominant value. For them, the Leader was not the ‘significant others’ any more, and the unitary ideological system of the Party became meaningless. In terms of the type of socialization, they came to engage in alternations. Re-homogenization taking the oppositional decoding position was resulted from the unification of the subjective experiences caused by the objective economic environment, the Arduous March. So far, North Korean users were considered as ‘passive’ and ‘homeogenous’ ones in the studies of reception of artworks. However, this study shows that the interviewees tended to take various decoding positions depending on their own life experiences. In their late teens and 20s, in particular, the types of reception of artworks became divergent. Even though the interviewees’ reception of artworks showed the homeogenous decoding position in the period of elementary and middle school and in years since the Arduous March, there was still a slight variation in the homeogenous position depending on the interviewees’ life experiences. Therefore, this study maintains that North Korean users are not passive receivers but decoders who can interpret artworks with his/her own life experiences. In addition, this study asserts that a person’s factual judgement is an important factor that can affect the formation of and the change in his/her reception of artworks over the lifetime. If a person finds a text true, the person takes the dominant-hegemonic decoding position. On the other hand, if a person finds it false, he/she takes the oppositional decoding position. Thus, the reception of artworks is closely related to people’s perception of the political and social system. The findings of this study are both an intended consequence (the dominant-hegemonic decoding during their attending elementary and middle school) and a unintended consequence (the interviewee’s oppositional decoding since the Arduous March) of North Korea’s cultural policy in which artworks are considered as a means of the governmental propaganda.
