The use of microalgae technology for the secondary treatment of the effluent from an anaerobic digestion system treating piggery manure offers attractive advantages over current wastewater treatment systems used by Korean piggery industries. Benefits of this dual system include recovery of nutrients in the form of biomass that might be used as a pig feed and raw material for biofuel production, which enables better recycling of water and improved economic returns. This study was aimed to evaluate the pretreatment methods for enhancing the growth and microalgal biomass yield using piggery wastewater as a nutrient source. Results showed that the microalgae, Chlorella vulgaris did not grow in the undiluted or diluted raw piggery wastewater. Undiluted piggery anaerobic digestate did not support the growth of c.vulgaris either. However, microalgae grew well in diluted piggery anaerobic digestate containing 165 mg NH3-N/L, 33.4 mg PO4-P/L and 76 mg Pt-CO/L. Number of microalgae cells reached 4.10~6.86x 106 Cells/mL and the specific growth rate was 0.0050~0.0056 d-1. These results indicated that anaerobic digestate containing high levels of organic matter, ammonia, and dark color, prevented the growth of microalgae. Thus it was thought that ammonia and color should be removed prior to microalgae cultivation. It was possible to remove color by ozonation or chlorination, meanwhile ammonia could be removed by means of air-stripping or breakpoint chlorination. And microalgae tried to cultures in anaerobic digestate of microalgae did not growing. This anaerobic digestate containing 102 mg NH3-N/L, 61 mg PO4-P/L and 61 mg Pt-CO/L. Number of cells reached 3.97~4.89x106 Cells/mL and the specific growth rate was 0.0040~0.0050 d-1. From these results, it was tentatively concluded that anaerobic digestion followed by microalgae cultivation could be one of the most promising strategies for the piggery wastewater treatment in which wasle reduction and energy production can be achieved simultaneously. At present, the optimization of microalgal culture conditions based on nutrient concentration and color in the piggery anaerobic digestate is going on.
