The emergence of today's information age and the subsequent advance in a variety of mass media have a huge impact on modern people's lives, and mass media are naturally one of great concerns for people in general. Specifically, adolescents have been exposed to image media from their birth. They are exposed to numerous visual images all day long from morning till night through TV, the Internet, billboards, mobile phones and movies, and they communicate with others via their own personal media. To stay abreast with the shifts of modern times, art subject is defined as an area of the arts that one makes a visual description of his or her own feelings and ideas, understand their own world and communicate with others. That aims at teaching students to foster their ability to represent how they feel and what they thinks in a creative way, to communicate with one another, to foster value judgment, to recognize the value of art, to enjoy it as part of their lives with affection and ultimately to grow into well-rounded people. All the objects of this class are clearly specified in the art curriculum. In fact, however, students are demotivated and lose interest in art due to stereotyped art classes that just provide expressive activities that require realistic description, and they eventually turn their back on art class. And then they indiscriminately accept visual culture that is indiscreetly distributed through all sorts of media such as the Internet. Indeed, art instruction fails to work properly, though it aims to teach students to cultivate their aesthetic sensitivity about the world, to get used to art in daily routine life and finally to enjoy their lives in a creative way. Now, the kind of art education that keeps up with the changes and environments of modern society and helps students to express their own culture in response to their needs is required. The purpose of this study was, therefore, to examine how to offer art instruction using pop art, which boldly inserted popular images and ordinary objects in works, and to provide this sort of instruction for first-grade middle school students. Chapter I described the necessity, purpose, c6ontent and method of the study. Chapter Ⅱ investigated the general characteristics of middle school students, for whom art instruction was to be offered using pop art, and the characteristics of their developmental stage in art expression in order to determine how to teach them to express themselves in consideration of their characteristics. Chapter Ⅲ explained the concept and background of pop art, which was used in this study's teaching plan and could be covered in appreciation class before expression instruction. How pop art developed in each country was described, and the characteristics of it and leading pop artists were explained as well. Chapter Ⅳ mapped out a workable lesson plan for middle school art instruction based on the previous chapters, and explained the process and results of the instruction that was actually offered for the selected students. In this study, mass media were utilized to stir up the interest, attention and spontaneous class participation of the students and to make art more accessible to them by stimulating them to use everyday things in their art works. This study is expected to provide an opportunity for students to realize that everything around them could turn into the arts, and such a change in their thinking is expected, in turn, to lead to the change in their lives.
