This study, in order to examine applicability of the DWMC for determining childhood abuse experience among adult females, develops assessment criteria of the drawing and evaluates reliability and validity of the drawing test. The population sample includes 100 domestic-violence victims at shelters, 48 single mothers, and 160 general married women, all of whom are child-rearing adult females. The present study employs the DWMC and the Child Abuse Experience Scale(CAES) as assessment tools and relies on, in analysis, Cronbach’s ⍺ for checking the reliability of the assessment criteria. In addition, for interrater and intrarater agreements, this study assesses Kappa quotients. And factorial analysis, Pearson’s relational analysis, cross-sectional analysis and discriminant analysis are conducted to confirm the validity of assessment criteria. The results are as below. First, this researcher, along with a supervisor, a Ph. D, a MA in art therapy, another art-therapy expert with research experiences of FWK, and two art-therapiests, underwent three stages for development of assessment criteria in the process of discussion and statistical results assesment. As a result, we assigned 3 or 4 points for each factor of 18 questions (3 points for weather factor, 3 points for coloring factor, 4 points for Mother-and-child factor). In the first stage, we selected 20 questions referring to assessment criteria used in Jung Jinsook’ FKW and Cho Joowon’s Mother-and-child drawing, in order to set up assessment criteria of DWMC. Among the 20 questions, when a question show a low or none response rate, the point was rearranged. In the cross-sectional analysis for the factors of DWMC and abuse experiences in the second stage, the non-related aspects with abuse (the sun, cloud, shape of person, usage of space, and detailed description) are suggested to eliminate. In the third stage, non-related items in the second stage was deleted and 18 assessment indexes, adding Manning’s assessment items of weather expression and weather size, were finally established: Weather factors including dark clouds, snow and rain, thunder, wind, expression of weather, weather size, movement of weather; Coloring factors such as degree of coloring, energy of coloring, stability of coloring, and number of colors; Mother-and-child factors including body contact, eye contact, facial expression of mother, facial expression of child, thought of person, omitting body-shape, and explanation of drawing. Second, the Cronbach’s ⍺for DWMC assessment criteria shows .70 for weather factor, .79 for coloring factor, and .69 for Mother-and-child factor. Cohen’s Kappa index shows A-B .802~1.0, B-C .789~1.0, C-A .841~1.0 for interrater reliability and .841~1.0 for intrarater reliability in reassessment of 4-week intervals. These numbers demonstrate the reliability of assessment criteria is in a satisfactory range. Third, this study examined the construct validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity in order to confirm the validity of DWMC as a determination tool for childhood abuse experience. It divided childhood abuse experience into three categories―physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglectedness―and measured them. In the factor analysis for the construct validity, this study found three factors and named them as weather factor, coloring factor, and Mother-and-child factor. Each subfactor for evaluation measure showed a relational value as .37~.84, for weather factor, .70~.86, for coloring factor, and .45~.67 for Mother-and-child. In analysis of convergent validity for the relationship between DWMC evaluation indexes and childhood-abuse-experience indexes, among weather factors thunder, weather description, weather size, weather movement showed considerable relationship for physical abuse, among coloring factors, degree of coloring, stability of coloring showed non-considerable relationship, and among Mother-and-child factors, eye contact, facial expression of mother, facial expression of child, thought of person, omitting body-shape and explanation of drawing showed non-considerable relationship. The results of discriminant validity analysis dividing categories of physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglectedness, for the characteristic responses to DWMC and their differences as well as for applicability of DWMC for determining childhood abuse showed as below. The physical abuse exhibited significant differences in wind, size of weather, movement of weather, energy of coloring, stability of coloring, body contacts, eye contacts, facial expression of mother, facial expression of child, thought of person, omitting body-shape, and explanation of drawing. The DWMC explained 23% physical abuse with 68.8% discrimination, and estimated 68.6% physical non-abuse group and 69.1% physical abuse group. For the category of emotional abuse, 16 factors, except thunder and snow and rain, showed significant differences. The DWMC explained 28% emotional abuse with 74.7% determinability, and estimated 76.6% emotional non-abuse group and 72.7% emotional abuse group. For the category of neglectedness, 16 factors, except number of colors and body contact, showed significant differences. The DWMC explained 29% neglectedness with 71.1% discrimination, and estimated 71.1% non-abuse group and 69.0% abuse group. The results proves that the developed DWMC evaluation criteria have reliability and validity, and can be used as a tool for determination of childhood abuse experience. Key words: Childhood abuse experience, main caregiver, Mother-and-child relationship, Draw-A-Weather of Mother and Child(DWMC)
