Since the 18thcentury Industrial Revolution, science has made eye-opening progress. The brilliant progress of science has opened an age where individual humans’genomes have been mapped, and where the previously incurable disease of cancer is now close to a cure. With progress in astrology, computer and information communications, and the Internet of Things, we will come be traveling space and be living among artificial intelligence robots in the not-too-distant future. Now, in the 21st century, shifts in technological generations have long surpassed the speed at which human generations shift. We are living in an age of scientific civilization, where progress is at light speed. This sheer speed of change is causes the spectrum of literature to change as well. Genre literature, which has been on the sidelines for a long time, has been taking center stage since the 2000s. The same applies for youth literature. The advancement of the SF genre is especially energetic. Beginning with children’s SF novels in the early 200s, the number of SF youth novels has increased significantly as of 2015. SF is the literature to express the change that is likely to happen and the people's lives with it due to science and technology. The development of science causes problems that threats to the future such as human cloning, chimeras, artificial intelligence robot, nuclear war and so on. Therefore, Dystopia is a theme that can't be overlooked in SF literature. The youths appear in SF Youth Novels and they are trying to solve conflicts and problems in the dystopian society. In this manuscript, I checked how dystopia affects the youth's lives and analyzed the ways that youths use to solve conflicts and how they grow through SF Youth Novels published since the 2000s. Based on such necessity, the current study has chosen select SF youth novels published since the 2000s, whose formats and subject material are representative of the SF genre. A study of their narratives was undertaken in the following order. Chapter I examines existing literature, while Chapter II examines the concept and historical background of youth and youth novels. Chapter II examines the concept of SF, the birth and history of SF in the west and Korea, and the subordinate genres and works of SF. The desirable directions for SF in youth novels were also pondered. In Chapter IV, the selected SF works were analyzed. Analysis showed that, whereas all works were based in the future, they varied in terms of setting: underground cities, sky cities, alien planets, past, present and future. The subject material also varied greatly, from cyber games, artificial intelligence robots, and human clones, aliens and alien planets, time travel and the educational system. Themes such as love, friendship, solidarity, self identity, social justice and other themes of interest to youth were employed. However, the customary characteristic of SF, illustrating a confrontation between the classes with power and the lower classes in a dystopian class society, was visible in all of the works. Of course, each of the works varies in their resolution to this problem, but in some of the works, the familiar method of narrative development seemed unoriginal, and the theme was too obviously exposed It is true that social and political issues impact the lives of youth. However, not all youth characters appearing in SF novels need to fight. It is fortunate, then, that in the works, a variety of different characters are presented, illustrating a variety of personalities which reading youth may internalize. What is necessary is the appearance of youth SF novels dealing with a variety of topics shared between the youth of the future and the youth living the present. Toward this end, it seems that the genre will need to study a variety of subject areas, including science, the humanities, the arts and philosophy, in depth. Also, more thought needs to be given as to what problems youth in the real world face, what worldly stories they are pondering, and how these stories and problems need to be modulated and expressed in SF.
