이를 위해 과거의 ICT(Information & Communication Technology)를 활용 교육에서 벗어나 컴퓨터 과학을 바탕으로 인간행동을 이해하여 문제를 해결하는 CT(Computational Thinking) 교육의 중요성이 강조되고 있다.

In this knowledge-information society, problem solving skills with information technology is the core competence of talents for the 21st century. In this respect, the educational focus is centered on computational thinking education, which can help students solve problems by understanding human behaviors based on computer science, rather than ICT education. Recently, CT(Computational Thinking) education using physical computing is widely implemented but only a few studies concern the effect of such education on CT ability. Moreover, most studies utilized open source hardwares such as Arduino, making it difficult for school children to approach. Thus, this study chose physical computing tools by analyzing various physical computing tools. Also, a physical computing program with design-based learning was developed. It allows students to make a creative product based on their own interest and experience. The subjects of this study were 5th graders in elementary school and a qualitative research methodology was employed to find out the impact of the physical computing program with design-based learning on CT ability. First, interaction protocols during the education activities were made and the coding system for analyzing CT-related factors was categorized into three factors; CT factors, CT problem solving skills, and communication modes. Then, the effect of the physical computing program with design-based learning on the students was examined through the analysis of the interaction protocols based on the coding system. The result of the study was as follows. First, the most frequently used CT factors in the physical computing program with design-based learning were ‘decomposition’ and ‘pattern recognition’ and the ‘generalization’ and ‘abstraction’ of the pattern were not frequent. Second, ‘testing’ and ‘debugging strategy’ took up the most of CT problem solving skills. Third, ‘confirmation check’ and ‘asking a question’ accounted for more than half of the communication modes, indicating that it is deeply related to ‘decomposition’ among CT factors. I believe that future research directions should be oriented toward a measure to overcome technical restrictions appearing in education using physical computing. Furthermore, it is suggested that a quantitative research methodology should be conducted to see the effect of physical computing education on students’ CT ability for systematic and effective CT education.
