‘The world of small creatures’ unit for 5th grade of elementary school is the unit which includes 5 kingdoms of creatures. The basic structure of instruction is based on artificial classifications and shows some unfamiliar creatures so that teachers and students can undergo various difficulties in classes. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to draw implications for class improvements by analyzing levels of difficulties and understandings of teaching & learning felt by teachers and students about ‘The world of small creatures’ unit, and to secure basic references to improve curriculums and textbooks. The objects of research are fifty elementary school teachers in seoul and Gyeonggi province and one hundred and one 5th graders of J elementary school in Gyeonggi province. Analyzed surveys about the level of teaching difficulties with teachers and the cause, the level of learning difficulties with students and the cause, the level of understandings about core concepts of the unit and the level of interests about individual species of creatures. As a result of the research, teachers were undergoing relatively high level of difficulties for small creatures living in the water, raising small creatures and making small ecology map of small creatures in total 11 instructions organizing ‘The world of small creatures’ unit, and the causes of difficulties were because of skilllessness of dealing with observation tools, insufficiency of experiment equipments and data, difficulty of securing creature samples and insufficient experiences of observing creatures with teachers and students. In students cases, they were undergoing relatively high difficulties for small creatures living in the water, small creatures living on the ground and raising small creatures, and the causes were because of skilllessness of controling microscopes, insufficiency of experiment equipments, difficulty of securing creture samples, insufficiency of experiences to see small creatures and excessive kinds of quoted creatures in textbooks. It was actually shown in the result of applying for achievement questions in each instruction that students understanding level was the lowest about small creatures living in the water or small creatures living on the ground. Meanwhile, the result of analysis for the level of interests and understandings about various kinds of species of creatures, was shown that the level of interests and understandings about ants, planarias and ladybugs was high with teachers while the level of interests and understandings about ants, ladybugs, snails, water fleas and viruses was relatively high with students. Based on the result of these analysis, elementary school teachers who are teaching the relevant unit can be expected to ensure internal stability of class operations through the efforts to recognize teaching & learning difficulties which teachers and students undergo while preparing classes, to deal with them and to make up for the weak points aggressively.
