(Abstract) With recent increase in the number of children with emotional·behavioral difficulties, such children can often be seen around us; and the number of children with such difficulties will only increase in the days ahead as our society develops. In case of children with emotional·behavioral difficulties, they not only have emotional·behavioral problems but have diverse developmental problems such as problems in sociality, language, and learning. In addition, noticeable linguistic shortcomings begin to appear in various communication situations when they begin to socialize as they approach school-age. Children with emotional·behavioral difficulties experience difficulties in class participation as well as peer adjustment and low academic achievements in schools regardless of their latent intellectual abilities. However, the reality is that studies on linguistic traits of children with such emotional·behavioral difficulties and studies for effective measures are still inadequate in South Korea. Thus, linguistic traits observed in Sentence Completion Test results of children with emotional·behavioral difficulties were examined in this study. For this study, Sentence Completion Tests were given to 26 children without and 26 children with emotional·behavioral difficulties; and attitudes toward communication as well as writing were analyzed. The main outcomes of this study are as follows. First, when writings in Sentence Completion Test results of children with and without emotional·behavioral difficulties were examined, the total number of syllables was lower in test results of children with emotional·behavioral difficulties. Also, the number of accurate syllables, the result of deducting the number of syllables with inaccuracies in insertion, substitution, omission, and writing according to pronunciation from the total number of syllables, was lower in test results of children with emotional·behavioral difficulties. In terms of inaccurate syllables, most inaccuracies were found in writing according to pronunciation and then in the order of substitution, omission, and insertion. Second, children without emotional·behavioral difficulties received higher scores in expressiveness in writing. On the other hand, children with emotional·behavioral difficulties received lower scores in all areas of expressiveness in writing such as vocabulary, expression, organization, and content. Furthermore, organization of components and form of writing were not natural, content in connection with topic was weak, and especially spelling and spacing rules were not observed. Third, in test results of children with emotional·behavioral difficulties, most inaccuracies were observed in penmanship. The types of inaccuracies were irregular spacing between letters, irregular sizes of letters, traces of repeated revisions, and illegibility, in the order of most to least inaccuracies. The overall inaccuracy rate was comparatively lower for children without emotional·behavioral difficulties. However, in case of repeated revisions, their inaccuracy rate was comparatively higher. Lastly, the rate of unanswered questions in Sentence Completion Test results was especially higher for children with emotional·behavioral difficulties compared to children without such difficulties. Particularly higher rates were observed in areas of personal perceptions, negative and positive elements, and attitudes toward their abilities. This shows that children with emotional·behavioral difficulties have difficulties in expressing their thoughts in such areas through written sentences. Such outcomes show that children with emotional·behavioral difficulties have linguistic and communication difficulties compared to children without such difficulties. Numerous specialists have been aware of linguistic and communication difficulties experienced by children with emotional·behavioral difficulties. However, the reality is that systematic studies on them have been inadequate. Thus, subsequent studies on whether linguistic traits of children with emotional·behavioral difficulties have relevance to school adaptation and academic achievements are necessary. Furthermore, it is necessary to conduct studies for measures to improve linguistic and communication skills in order to prevent and reduce difficulties in communication that children can experience in everyday life by applying effective measures for children with emotional·behavioral difficulties based on the outcomes of such studies.
