이러한 내용은 DFT, DFT+U 계산에 따른 포논 연구, 페르미 표면, 감수성 (susceptibility), 부분 상태 밀도 (partial density of state) 를 통해 뒷받침되었다.

In this thesis, we have studied complex phase transitions observed in various transition metal oxides (TMOs) by using the ab initio density functional theory (DFT). The DFT+U (U: Coulomb correlation) approach was also employed to describe the strong electron-electron interactions in TMOs. Lattice dynamics, i.e. phonon, which plays an important role in a structural transition, has been analyzed with density functional perturbation theory (DFPT) or frozen phonon method. The mechanisms of metal-insulator transitions (MITs), and structural transitions in strongly correlated TMOs under the temperature or pressure variation are discussed. First, to investigate the pressure-induced structural transitions in chromium dioxide (CrO2), phonon dispersions and total energy band structures are calculated as a function of pressure. The observed structural transition has been theoretically reproduced at P? 10 GPa from the ground state tetragonal CrO2 (t-CrO2) of rutile type to orthorhombic CrO2 (o-CrO2) of CaCl2 type. The half-metallic property is found to be reserved in o-CrO2. The softening of Raman-active B1g phonon mode, which is responsible for this structural transition, is demonstrated. The second structural transition is found to occur for P≥ 61.1 GPa from ferromagnetic (FM) o-CrO2 to nonmagnetic (NM) monoclinic CrO2 (m-CrO2) of MoO2 type, which is related to the softening mode at q = R(1/2, 0, 1/2 ). The third structural transition has been newly identified at P=88.8 GPa from m-CrO2 to cubic CrO2 of CaF2 type that is a FM insulator. Second, lattice dynamics of rutile VO2 (R-VO2) in the DFT and the DFT+U band calculations were investigated to explore the driving mechanisms of the MIT and the structural transition in VO2. We have found that the phonon softening instabilities occur in both cases, but the softened phonon mode only in the DFT+U describes properly both the MIT and the structural transition from R-VO2 to monoclinic VO2 (M1-VO2). The present ab initio phonon dispersion calculations clearly demonstrate that the Coulomb correlation effect plays an essential role of assisting the Peierls transition in R-VO2 and producing the spin-Peierls ground state in M1-VO2. Third, in order to explore the driving mechanism of the concomitant MIT and structural transitions in quasi-one-dimensional hollandite K2Cr8O16, electronic structures and phonon properties are investigated by employing the ab initio DFT calculations. We have found that the imaginary phonon frequency reflecting the structural instability appears only in the DFT+U calculation, which indicates that the Coulomb correlation plays an essential role in the structural transition. The lattice displacements of the softened phonon at X explain the observed lattice distortions in K2Cr8O16 perfectly well, suggesting the Peierls distortion vector Q of X (0, 0, 1/2). The combined study of electronic and phonon properties reveals that half-metallic K2Cr8O16, upon cooling, undergoes the correlation-assisted Peierls transition to become a Mott-Peierls ferromagnetic insulator at low temperature. Finally, the MIT of hollandite-type vanadates K2V8O16 were investigated using DFT and DFT+U methods. K2V8O16 has quasi-one-dimensional column structure and undergoes the MIT and Peierls-like structural transition as decreasing temperature. We have compared the mechanism of the MIT and the electronic and magnetic state of K2V8O16 and that of Rb2V8O16, which only undergoes the MIT not the structural transition. The charge ordering and orbital ordering of V t2g bands have essential role in driving the MIT. These orderings originate from the interplay of the tetragonal distortion, on-site Coulomb interaction, and the local magnetic interaction. Peierls-like distortion would not play an important role in the MIT.
