Massive galaxies are the end product of the hierarchical universe. Understanding them thus requires reliable physics on all scales, from individual stellar populations to structure formation. In this thesis, a new semi-analytic model, ySAM, is used to investigate the stellar mass assembly and chemical enrichment histories of massive galaxies in a self-consistent manner. Semi-analytic models compute galaxy properties based on dark matter halo merger trees. As recent studies have pointed out, different tree building algorithms can extract differing merger histories from a common cosmological volume simulation of structure formation. Since a merger tree is an essential backbone of semi-analytic models, the impact of tree building algorithms on galaxy properties in ySAM is investigated. It is found that model galaxy properties can vary between trees when using a common parameter set. The differences, however, can be minimised by independently calibrating the semi-analytic model for each tree. Therefore, given the current uncertainties in galaxy formation physics, these differences may not necessarily be viewed as significant. Recent high redshift surveys have shown that the number density of massive galaxies (logM/M⊙ = 11.5 - 12.0) increases faster than that of less massive galaxies in 0 < z 13.0 at z = 0, galaxy mergers become dominant in mass growth by z = 0. However, in-situ star formation is always the primary channel for the mass growth of central galaxies in less massive haloes. ySAM has been developed to rigorously compute mass loss and chemical evolution of each stellar population. The galaxy mass-metallicity relation and O/Fe ratios of early-type galaxies are well reproduced in ySAM. However, massive galaxies (log M/M⊙ > 11.0 at z = 0) with high merger accretion fractions suffer from too low metallicities, below Z⊙. Frequent small galaxy mergers suppress chemical enrichment of the massive galaxies. Moreover, more mergers trigger QSO-mode AGN feedback more frequently, resulting in bigger mass loss of metal-enriched cold gas. It is not relieved by tuning free parameters within the ranges reproducing empirical galaxy mass functions or stellar-to-halo mass relation. This conflict should be settled in due course. In this thesis, ySAM well reproduces empirical galaxy properties by using simplified physical ingredients. It seems that the state-of-the-art semi-analytic models for galaxy formation and evolution are versatile and stable to be comparable with observational data.
