The present study attempts to explore the listening comprehensibility of Korean EFL learners towards the variety of English accents, such as American, British, Singaporean, and Indian, as well as high school students’ and secondary school teachers’ attitudes towards World Englishes. To investigate this topic, 120 high school students in Incheon took an English listening test that used American English, British English, Singaporean English, and Indian English. The result is then analyzed with a one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test through the SPSS 16 Statistics program. After listening to the recordings, students were surveyed on the speaker’s nationality and perceived image. Students were also asked about their overall attitude towards World Englishes. In addition, 50 in-service teachers in Seoul, Incheon, and Gyeonggi Province participated in a survey that inquired about their attitudes and the application of World Englishes to the public English education system. The research shows that students’ comprehensibility towards American English and British English were 2 points higher than Singaporean and Indian English. Furthermore, students exhibit difficulty in matching the speaker’s nationality to the accent. An interesting finding is that when asked which speaker had a better “image”, students gave higher marks to Singaporean and Indian speakers while showing lower overall comprehensibility compared to American and British English. A large number of students responded that the ownership of the English language belongs to either the U.S.A. or the U.K. On the other hand, when it comes to the standard of English, they answered that there is no standard in English since English is already adapted to various countries of the world. This demonstrates that students are informed on the perspective of World Englishes. In addition, teachers agreed that students need to be exposed to a variety of English accents. Even though not many of them are currently teaching World Englishes in class, they are willing to do so in the future. With these results, this research suggests the followings. First, students need to be exposed to various English accents in school, breaking away from the usual American English centered instruction and evaluation system. Second, a preparation course for teachers or an in-service teacher program is required to equip them with the skills to inculcate students with the proper perspective towards World Englishes. Last but not least, there should be diverse assessment tools to measure students’ ability to apply English in their everyday life. The outcomes of this study is significant, as it gives us an insight into current high school students’ comprehensibility and attitudes towards World Englishes, and that gives us directions for the future approach of teaching World Englishes in school.
