This study is to find out how we can apply a method of self-directed learning to museum education for students to build up their museum experience individually. The purpose of this study is to show how the experiential learning program in the museums that self-directed learning theory was applied to are designed, to find out what students experience in these programs, and the effect the programs have on the students. To achieve this goal, I studied a theoretical background of experiential learning programs in museums as well as the self-directed learning theory. By studying the two major theoretical backgrounds, I obtained validity based on the relationship of the two theories. In this study, I decided to use Garrison's integrated viewpoint and designed a program using Knowles' self-directed learning process which required a diagnosis of learners' needs as its first step for students to make the experiential learning program in museum learner-centered. The circular structure of Kolb's experiential learning theory is applied to each step of this program to connect students' previous and current experiences. Students used self-directed learning strategies through the whole process, and took the lead in their learning. The students who participated in this study were 7 elementary school students (5th grade). All of them had different study achievements, frequency of museum visits, and experience of self-directed learning in museums. I chose a qualitative research method to thoroughly find out their learning processes. I observed them, had an interview with them and surveyed them. Following that, I collected the results and analyzed them. The program in this study is divided into a 3 steps-process; 1) before visiting the museum - Student found out their needs, decided on learning goals, searched information for museum visits, 2) in a stage of the experiential learning in the museum - they participated and lead the program they designed, 3) after the experiential learning program in a museum - they evaluated the results of the program. The teacher's role was to remind the students of what they were supposed to do in each step and to help them find a path for achieving their goals. Additionally, the teacher helped students reflect on their thoughts by asking certain assistive questions. The following outlines and details the activities students had done in each step, as well as the strategies of self-directed learning used in this study; During the stage of making a diagnosis of students' needs, students conceptualized what they wanted to apply to a new experiential learning program in museums by reviewing former museum visits. They put these ideas in their plan for the new program. Here we can see the students having used the 'self-evaluating' strategy. The stage of setting a goal of for the program involved students choosing a common keyword(Hanyang) which they all wanted to learn. They utilized reflective thinking for what they wanted to learn, arranged these informations, then categorized them and made the sub-themes. Based on these sub-themes, they decided on a subject (topic) and a goal (which was to find out Hanyang's landscape, structure and the people's lifestyle in Hanyang). They chose the Seoul Museum of History, Exhibition room No.1. After the students' decision to learn this subject, I analyzed the objects and exhibition room to help students with their museum learning. Students used intellectual strategies; reforming their information, setting further goals, checking whether they understood on not, keeping a goal-oriented strategy as a motivational strategy, and rearranging physical space for behavioral strategy. In the stage of searching for information, students read the selected books relevant to the topic and learned some prerequisite knowledge for a better understanding. Among the strategies, students used the following; demonstration, recording, structuring/transforming information, evaluating their own intellectual strategy, and goal-oriented strategy of motivational strategy. For the stage of designing experiential learning programs in museums, the students made plans referring to the things they conceptualized in the previous stage. Students rearranged the method of visiting the gallery based on the sub-theme, and planned the learning schedule. Students used self evaluation, keeping the goal-oriented of motivational strategy, rearranging physical space and managing time of behavioral strategies. In the stage of implementing the experiential learning activities, students participated deeply, keeping the schedule and the directions they had designed. Students took a lead during the learning process, and interacted to with each other. Students used methods of recording, restructuring, transforming data, researching data, meta-cognitive strategies of intellectual strategies, keeping a goal-oriented of motivational strategy, asking for help with behavioral strategy, rearranging physical space, and the strategy of managing time. The final stage of evaluating the whole experiential learning process, students thought of the elements they learned from the programs, the strategies they use, the reason for using the aforementioned strategies, their impressions during the programs, as well as the possibilities and potentials for new experiences that were formed during the program. Following this, they expressed these by having an interview, and writing down how they felt. They used the strategy of evaluating themselves and remaining goal-oriented in motivation. The researcher analyzed the students' self-reflections, the interview with the students, the recordings, and the observation data which led to the results for this study. The following were the results from the analysis. First, students participated in this museum program being goal-oriented. Secondly, students reformed their aspect of organizing concepts, and came up with a new meaning by connecting the
