Developing Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) through using Cultural-Based Task Activities in the Primary Classroom원문보기

With the development of information and communications technology as well as transportation, globalization is growing rapidly. As the borders that once defined our cultures are becoming ambiguous, English is being used as a means of communication between different language speakers. Thus, English is being used more frequently outside of English-speaking countries. English is used as an international language for communication. It has an important role in other cultures as the language of communication and can act as a link between cultures. Based on these global views, the English education system’s objectives aim to create ‘Intercultural Speakers' in the Korean revised national curriculum. To develop the learner’s Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC), the revised curriculum’s objectives state that the learner can understand different countries’ cultures from a cultural relativism viewpoint and develop their own culture to introduce abroad. The revised curriculum also provides content related to cultural understanding and guidance about teaching and learning activities that can help explain the differences between English-speaking and non-English-speaking cultures. However, the revised curriculum doesn’t provide these specific teaching and learning activities, so the cultural aspect of English education is fragmentarily based on textbooks. The purpose of this study is to teach the culture more systematically and actively, while developing the learner’s ICC using cultural-based task activities. Also, finding out which task-based activities can effect the learner’s affective domain change. For this purpose, Bierstedt’s (1957) cultural types and Willis’ (1996) task types were considered and used to conduct cultural-based task activities in this study. The results of the study were as follows: First, the two groups were homogeneous groups when the pre one-way ANOVA on ICC was conducted. However, the two groups became heterogeneous groups when the post one-way ANOVA was conducted. This result shows cultural-based task activities effect the development of learner’s ICC. Secondly, a one-way ANOVA was conducted to find out the effect of cultural-based task activities on the learners’ level (high, medium and low). The results of one-way ANOVA showed that the high level learners between the two groups did not show a significant difference, but the medium and low level learners of the two groups showed a significant improvement. This means the medium and low level learners in the experimental group showed a significant improvement when taught with cultural-based task activities. Third, the results of one-way ANOVA on the learner’s affective domain change showed that only the experimental group has significant differences. The cultural-based task activities provide abundant teaching and learning materials as well as an abundance of cultural activities based on tasks. This is expected, given the positive effect on the interest, curiosity, and attitude of the experimental group when compared to traditional textbook-based lessons. These study results present a way to teach cultural-based task activities, as well as provide concrete proposals for cultural-based education methods and emphasize the continued and systematic teaching and learning about a culture.
