Study on art education with focus to individual characteristics to prevent school violence Yeonseon Han Department Fine Arts Education Major The Graduate School of Education Sungshin Women’s University School violence in Korea has become a social issue beyond the issue within schools. It also drew political attention, as demonstrated by the Park Geun-hye administration, in 2012, listing school violence as one of the four greatest vices to deal with. However, despite such considerable attention, the prevalence of school violence has not decreased. This is because a systematic plan for reduction and prevention of school violence has not been effectively provided. To understand the cause of school violence and provide various interventions accordingly, character development is most important, and art education can be effective in cultivating this. Many studies have demonstrated that art education is very effective for character development due to its characteristics such as free expression of emotions and fostering communication skills through appreciation activities. However, the art curriculum has been trimmed down in Korea due to education being focused on entrance exams, and it has been altered into a competition-based education curriculum, despite many efforts to revive art education. The current art education suffers from a lack of opportunity for artistic activities that develop emotions due to insufficient course hours. In addition, it is losing sight of its true goal of increasing aesthetic ability in individuals and bringing harmony in cultural life of new creation by cooperating with social groups to which the individuals belong. This study aims to propose desirable art activity for prevention of school violence in ongoing systematic implementation in school through art education founded upon cooperation without division, enthusiasm, social cohesion, and creative activity, rather than art therapy with a therapeutic purpose targeting perpetrators or victims of school violence. Accordingly, the study proceeded as follows. First, we conducted literature review including previous studies focused on understanding of school violence, encompassing components of school violence prevention education, definition and types of school violence, and causes, countermeasures, and prevention of school violence. According to the literature review, school violence occurs in increasingly lower ages, vicious cycles of victims becoming perpetrators, and psychological and emotional types of school violence such as relational bullying are growing; students’ awareness of the seriousness of verbal and psychological violence is low; and group perpetration, intensification of violence, and cyber bullying are increasingly. As government-level measures and prevention, “The 3rd School Violence Prevention and Measure Basic Plan” expanded the opportunity to foster character such as respect, care, and emotions through art education in the area of character education-oriented school violence prevention enhancement, and the Eoulim (harmony) Program have remained in operation. This suggests that art education has been demonstrated as an effective school violence prevention measure, and the efforts to prevent school violence with art education are expanding. According to the expansion of school violence prevention efforts with art education, we examined the 2011 Revised Art Curriculum and relevant previous studies regarding character education through art education in the current school setting. The results showed that the 2011 Revised Art Curriculum set the goal of holistic human development for students to continue and develop art and culture by understanding objects with aesthetic sensibility and intuition and enjoying life creatively; however, there has been no provision of specific plans for holistic human development. Previous studies indicated that students’ and teachers’ awareness of the necessity of art curriculum as character education has not been properly cultivated due to the absence of specific plans for curriculum and content and the academic climate focused on entrance exams. Regarding the relationship between art education and character education, we verified the validity of art education as character education by analyzing previous studies on views of art by Schiller, Steiner, and Herbert Reed. Based on the reviews, the present study aimed to propose an art education plan consisting of character education for school violence prevention that can be implemented in art curricula in school, based on empathy and communication, self-esteem, emotion regulation, and conflict resolution among six modules of the Eoulim Program. Because this study focused on art education for character development as causing indirect prevention instead of direct prevention by change in awareness of school violence, we excluded school violence awareness and coping in the six modules of the Eoulim Program. This was because the literature review indicated that art activities created based on empathy and communication, self-esteem, emotion regulation, and conflict resolution can develop character through not only curricular content and activity but also students’ self-examination as well as collaborative learning and communication among students. Regarding the cause of school violence, various causes are combined. Therefore, a solution for school violence should not be examined in one single aspect. In addition, character should be developed by character education, which can be provided on an ongoing basis within a school curriculum instead of perfunctory one-way delivery of school violence prevention education. Therefore, this study proposes as a solution for school violence the possibility of character education with a realistic art program implementable in art classes in school. The present authors expect this study will help with integrating the proposed art education plan into ongoing art class activity in school as character education as a solution for school violence, contributing to holistic human development and prevention of school violence, and, ultimately, realization of a beautiful society.
