This study aims analyze the images shown in the characteristics and personality of characters appearing in the novel called the 'Guunmong' of Chosun era in order to design the Korean costumes that fits the characters. 'Guunmong' which is considered as an excellent literary work is our country's classic novel with 1 male character and 8 female characters where each 9 characters appearing in the novel has a unique view of life and humanity which are expressed in a variety of images and features. Therefore, by analyzing each character and with a variety of costumes configuration, it was determined to be suitable for expressing the costumes that utilizes the Korean costumes. This study has a purpose of designing and producing the modern and stylish Korean costumes in accordance with the movement of trying to develop and research the popularization and keeping the traditional culture so that it can be utilized as high-value-added products in our life. To achieve this, this study has investigated the tendency and the directions of Korean costumes appearing in the modern era by analyzing the images and characteristics shown in the characters of classical novel 'Guunmong' and by examining the types and formative characteristics according to the evolution of Korean costumes. As a result of examining the previous studies, books and Internet resources, etc, the characters of the novel each shows a distinctive character according to the behaviors and identities such as children of gentry, geisha, assassins, maid and mermaid, etc. Korean costumes based on the fundamental configurations such as jacket, pants, skirts and overcoat has changed its forms according to the time. The jacket was shorten as it entered the Chosun era from the Three Kingdoms period and changed into a form of tying from a band like design. Chosun era was the time when a status system was seen very strictly where according to the status the costumes were classified into royal robes, official uniforms and the costumes of middle class and common people. Especially the overcoat was shown in a variety of ways through the separation of social hierarchy and its purpose. During the enlightenment period, an appearance of Western costumes and mixed cultures brought the inflow of foreign civilization and showed practical and simplified costumes regardless of status or rank. Afterwards up to the modern time, the Korea costumes have shown the feature of formal dress but due to a variety of activities of Korean costumes designers and the changes of new awareness by the younger generation on the traditional costumes, the modern Korean costumes has newly reinterpreted the tradition and has established itself as one of the fashion culture focused on the current trends. And the Korean costumes with unique formative characteristics have as an aesthetic beauty that shows the harmony of curves and straight lines through a variety of types of collars, tying, folds and openings. Based on these theoretical backgrounds, the costumes that express the images of each character was designed and produced by analyzing the characters which appears in 'Guunmong.' The Work I have expressed free and relaxed children of gentry by producing the overcoat which expresses the modesty and temperance of gentry and the vest that utilizes the Dapo having the features of overcoat being blown in the wind. The Work II has expressed the image which is normative and chic by producing the jacket that has utilized the ceremonial robe collars of neatly styled suit and the pants that has utilized the underskirt according to the virtuous and arrogant characteristics of Jung, Gyeongpae. The Work III has expressed the identity of the princess with dignified and warm image using a long pink skirt emphasized with femininity and the blouse that has utilized the ceremonial robe collar according to the gentle and feminine characteristics of Lee, Sohwa. The Work IV has produced a lilac Cheollik dress utilizing the characteristics of Samhoejang jacket to create quiet and graceful feeling according to the pitiful characteristics of Jin, Chaebong. The Work V has expressed the image of innocent girl by producing the Cheollik dress in the form of a short jacket using pale pink hemp according to the obedient characteristics of a girl. The Work VI has expressed the coat that utilized the long hood which was exclusive to the women based on Confucian influence with understated colors according to the prudent and chaste characteristics of Gye, Seomwol. The Work VII has expressed the colors as feminine but in the form of men's clothes to show the femininity and masculinity at the same time with the design applied with men's clothes according to the Adonis characteristics of geisha Jeok, Kyunghong. The Work VIII has shown the charm and charisma of femme fatale with the white pants and black jacket utilized with military look Cheollik according to the characteristics of assassin Shim, Yoyeon.
