Recent studies regarding the properties of carbon nanotubes (CNT) have made countless progress into CNT fibers research. However, there are still rooms for discovery behind improving structural properties of CNT in the form of bundles. Individually bundled CNT has weak interfacial bonding strength with low shear modulus. Thus, it is the upmost interest to develop and employ post-production treatments to the CNT fibers that would potentially improve their properties. Bulk-production CNT fibers are carried out through consecutive direct-spinning method. CNTs are synthesized by vertical chemical vapor deposition (CVD) using the mixture of acetone, Thiophene, and Ferrocene solution as carbon source. The aggregation of CNTs, being inherently hydrophobic, are shrunk using the water tank positioned underneath the CVD. Accordingly, CNT fibers are continuously produced and prepared for post-production treatments that enhance their mechanical strength and change their crystalline structure. Here, we present a method to improve properties of CNT fibers by post-production O2/Ar plasma treatment. The treatment results in an increase in mechanical strength attributed by the realignment of the CNTs and the changes to their crystalline structure. Moreover, compaction of CNT fibers has been observed by injecting inert gases like nitrogen which removed amorphous carbon and promoted amine activation on the surface of CNTs. Therefore, the nature of the post-production treatment introduced to the fibers resulted in high-strength and light-weight material that is poised for breakthrough in various field of applications.
