Ballasted track takes advantage of feasible maintenance and cheaper initial construction costs , but ballast materials tend to degrade due to the increase of train million gross tonnage (MGT) that results in decreasing the capability of shock absorption, interlocking friction, and the resistance to track irregularity. Therefore, it is necessary to establish a methodology to improve the structural condition of ballast materials which is in the middle of fouling. Several researches have been conducted or being conducted to physically reinforce fouled ballast materials by applying geosynthetics. However the geosynthetics have been limitedly applied due to difficulty in installation along the in-service route. This study aimed to verify the effect of reinforcement on the fouled ballast using ballast stabilizer which is relatively easy to apply in-service route. Field experimental program was conducted to compare the lateral ballast resistance in case of before and after application of ballast stabilizer. The test results revealed that ballast stabilizer was effective in increasing the lateral ballast resistance, which is a key force component that is resistant to rail buckling and track irregularities. A series of laboratory repetitive load triaxial compression test was performed to compare the accumulated plastic strain in case of before and after application of ballast stabilizer to the ballast materials having a different level of fouling Index(FI). The results showed that the accumulated plastic strain increased by 2.4 times and 2.7 times, respectively, when the FI was 14 and 21 compared to the case where FI was zero without application of ballast stabilizer. In the event of application of ballast stabilizer, the accumulated plastic strain decreased by 41.8 and 28.8 percent, respectively, when the FI was 14 and 21. The resilient modulus was found to increase with application of ballast stabilizer. The degree of increase of resilient modulus was larger when the FI was 14 compared to 21. The laboratory test results confirmed that the effectiveness of ballast stabilizer, but the effectiveness tend to decrease with a larger number of FI that indicates larger portion of fine materials resulting in decreasing the infiltration depth of ballast stabilizer through fouled ballast materials. Currently, the ballast stabilizer is primarily employed along the high-speed route in practice, but the findings of this study limitedly suggests the use of ballast stabilizer for normal route as well, where the fouling of ballast materials is locally being progressed, in order to delay maintenance cycle of ballast replacement, prevent track irregularity, and consequently ensure the stability of track structure.
