A study of vicarious trauma among trauma counselors: an exploration of thier experience and the development of a scale원문보기

The purpose of this study was 1) to explore the impact of vicarious
trauma(VT) among trauma counselors and their coping strategies toward
VT, 2) to identify the similarities and differences of the experience of VT
between novice and expert counselors, and based on these findings 3) to
develop a scale for VT. To this end, two interrelated studies were
conducted.
Study 1 explored the distinctive characteristics of novice and expert
trauma counselors regarding the impact of VT and coping strategies
utilized to counter VT through a research method called Concept Mapping.
A total of 16 trauma counselors - eight novice(less than 3 years of
experience) and eight expert (more than 10 years of experience) - were
interviewed and based on the interview data, core statements on VT were
generated. For data analysis, twenty eight trauma counselors participated in
sorting and rating the statements. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical
cluster analysis were conducted to develop the concept maps. The result of
these concept maps provided a conceptual framework on the effect of VT
and coping strategies in trauma counselors. It also showed the similarities
and differences between novice and expert counselors.
Study 2 examined the psychometric properties of the vicarious trauma
scale based on the findings from the study 1 and reviewing of existing
literature. Six sub-scales, namely ‘physiological effect’, ‘emotional effect’,
‘cognitive effect’, ‘social effect’, ‘counseling relationship effect’, ‘positive
effect’ were hypothesized and preliminary items for the scale were selected.
The experts-contents-validity was confirmed and the final preliminary
scale was developed. The confirmatory factor analysis showed a reasonable
fit index for this six factor structure of the vicarious trauma scale. The
results from a convergent and discriminant validity indicated that there is
a correlation between the vicarious trauma scale and Secondary Traumatic
Stress Scale(STSS), Trauma and Attachment Belief Scale(TABS),
Counselor Burnout Inventory(CBI), and Inventory of Counter-transference
Behavior(ICB). At the same time, a significant discrepancy between these
scale was identified, which confirmed that the scale is a valid measurement
for VT. A concurrent criterion-related validity analysis indicated that the
scale is negatively correlated with subjective wellness and life satisfaction.
In addition, relationships between this scale and variables including work
experience, age, and educational level were analyzed. The result indicated
that expert group in comparison with novice group experiences
significantly higher level of ‘positive effect’ and the scale is negatively
correlated with variables of age and educational levels. Finally implications
and limitations of this study as well as suggestions for further research
