최근에 BIM(Building Information Modeling) 프로세스를 적용하여 설계를 진행하는 사례가 많이 소개 되고 있다.

Recently, in designing works, many design cases applying BIM(Building Information Modeling) process have been introduced. Despite of various advantages of BIM, BIM-based design is not generally utilized yet. So, designers who are familiar with 2D CAD experience difficulties in applying BIM. This is because the designers have had little opportunities to become familiar with the newly introduced BIM-based design process, and the designers are not so confident when they have to complete the design procedure through this newly introduced process. Some case studies also show that BIM-based design is less efficient than 2D CAD design. However, this study aims to prove BIM-based design's efficiency in inputs of workers and time spent in comparison with 2D CAD design. First, this study suggested a case of BIM-based design and separated the designing procedure into two steps--making design plans and gaining approval process, and making construction drawings. Next, this study investigated and analysed the amount of workers and period of cycle used. For comparative purposes, this study additionally analysed three other cases of 2D CAD design which are similar to the previous case for BIM design in terms of size and purpose. Thus, the results present that BIM design reduced the amount of inputs of workers and time spent compared with 2D CAD design. However, due to the factors like approval process and ordering parties, the practitioners may not trust the results of the analysis of the amount of time spent of aforementioned first step. In order to guarantee the objectivity of the results, this study limits its boundary into the second step of making drawings, which has fewer factors than the first one. Additionally, this study carried out a pilot project of BIM design method to analyze the amount of inputs of workers and time spent. The author provided the working drawings made by BIM design method, and subsequently conducted a survey with experts to find out the estimated amount of time spent when making the working drawings by 2D CAD design method. Looking at the results of the pilot project and the expert surveys, BIM design method consumed less amount of time spent than 2D CAD method. In conclusion, to increase the reliability of the results, the author conducted face-to-face interviews with another group of experts of BIM design and then introduced BIM design method's factors which boost efficiency at work in comparison to the 2D CAD design. These factors can be summarized into four points: 1) decrease in manual works due to BIM's characteristics, which is oriented to architectural design, 2) drawing automation functions like entering tags, 3) efficient job allocation by collaboration, 4) preliminary standardization such as project template.
