Morphological study Orostachys plant, belonging to the Crassulaceae, is a monocarpic plant which wither after flowering and producting seeds. The plants start dormancy in the 1st autumn, and blooms in the 2nd autumn. Orostachys plants, however, have dormancy or flower in spring or summer reacting sensitively to environmental changes. Several reports on the flowering physiology of O. japonicus A. Berger ('Wasong') have been presented so far, but not about other Orostachys plants. No reports on dormancy of those plants have been made yet. In present study, the mechanisms of dormancy and flowering of Orostachys plants native to Korea studied. For this purpose, morphological studies were conducted at different growth stages, and the effects of environmental factors including day length and plant growth regulators on dormancy or flowering of Orostachys plants were studied. Growth stages according to the life cycle of Orostachys plants were classified to followings and morphological changes were examined at each stage. Leaves and stem of Orostachys plants at growth stage have a normal shape. Leaves at the central part were gathered to middle and bulbed up at dormancy stage at which day length is shortened and temperature decreased. At bolting start stage, leaves at central part were gathered to middle but did not make a bulb. This stage was considered as a transition stage from vegetative to reproductive stage but no flower bud was observed at microscopic level. Flower buds were observed at inflorescence elongation stage and floral development was made up during inflorescence elongation. On October, white florets were bloomed winding up the inflorescence at counterclockwise and the plants were withered with seed maturation. Day length affects morphogenesis of Orostachys plants. Leaf length was increased with the increment of day length and shortened with decrease of day length and had a round leaf shape in O. iwarenge Hara from Jeju. and O. ramosus.. Dormancy physiology To evaluate the effects of day elongation on the dormancy induction of Orostachys plants, various day lengths were set at growth chambers for the plants. The results differed according to the plant species. Dormancy was started very soon after experiment with the increment of day length, at the same time dormancy breaking were started very soon after dormancy start in O. japonica (Maxim.) A. Berger and O. japonica (Maxim.) from Youngdong. Dormancy started at almost same time at all day lengths in O. latiellipticus Y. N. Lee, and no dormancy breaking was observed at below 12 hours day length. Bolting start and inflorescence elongation were observed over 14 hours day length without dormancy at O. minuta (Kom.) A. Berger. Effect of day length and radiation on the dormancy breaking was evaluated. Dormancy breaking was stimulated with increment of day length, and lower irradiation stimulated dormancy breaking at the same 16 day length. O. latiellipticus Y. N. Lee, O. iwarenge(Makino) Hara from Jeju and O. ramosus. were less sensitive to day length at dormancy, O. japonicus A. Berger and O. japonic from Youngdong considered as a sensitive species. Flower physiology To evaluate effect of day length on the flowering of O. malacophyllus from Taeback, the plants at bolting start stage were cultured at a growth chamber with various day lengths. Inflorescence elongation was observed but no flowering at long day length (14h). Flowering was observed at day length below 12 hours. These results were observed at O. japonicus A. Berger and O. japonic (Maxim.) from Youngdong, O. malacophyllus from Taeback in which over 14 hours day length was needed for bolting start and below 14 hours day length for inflorescence elongation, and below 12h day length for flowering. The other Orostachys plants had inflorescence elongation irrespective of day length. Gibberellic acid(GA3) was sprayed at foliages of Orostachys plants to stimulate flowering. However, there is no evidence that GA stimulate flowering of Orostachys plants. On the contrary, flowering delay was observed at some species of Orostachys plants. Low temperature was clarified not to be an important role to flowering in Orostachys plants.
