In radiotherapy treatments using high energy radiation beams, it is important to recognize that how much of the doses are injected into lesions and normal tissues. Among the normal tissues, the human skin is composed of three layers as epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layer; here, the basal layer, the innermost layer of the epidermis, is easily damaged by therapeutic radiation beams, and then radiation induced injuries such erythema, desquamation, and necrosis can occur on the skin. In skin and build-up regions, however, it is difficult to measure the doses using conventional dosimeters due to their large sensitive volume. In order to measure skin and build-up doses for therapeutic radiation beams, in this study, the ultra-thin fiber-optic dosimeters(UTFODs) is fabricated using an organic scintillator, a wavelength shifting fiber and a plastic optical fiber. This type of dosimeter has many advantages such as high spatial resolution, real-time readout and water equivalence. To evaluate the feasibility of the UTFODs, the percentage depth doses(PDDs) in a build-up region of gamma-ray beams from a Co-60 therapy unit and 10 MV photon beams from CLINAC were obtained with the UTFODs, and the results were compared with those of EBT films and a conventional fiber-optic dosimeter. Additionally, surface doses for the gamma-ray beams were measured according to the thicknesses of the scintillators, irradiation field sizes and irradiation angles. From the results, the PDDs obtained with the UTFODs are in good agreement with those obtained with the EBT films, and the surface doses linearly increased with the scintillator thicknesses. And the skin doses increased with the irradiation angle of the gamma-ray beams and irradiation field sizes. Additionally, the scintillation outputs of the UTFODs had a linear trend to the absorbed doses. Also, the scintillation output of UTFODs increased linearly with increased the monitor units and dose rates of CLINAC. The PDDs obtained by the UTFODs and the EBT films for 10 MV photon beams showed a similar tendency. In the MCNPX simulation, although the calculated skin dose has about 10% difference from the result of the 100 of UTFODs, the simulation results except for the skin region showed good agreements with those of the UTFODs. It is anticipated that the UTFOD proposed in this study can effectively be used to measure skin and relative depth doses in radiotherapy dosimetry.
