In this study, it was carried out bending fatigue tests on the long-term used rails taken from both ballasted track and concrete track. Based on the test results, a S-N curve expressing the remaining service life of the long-term used rails at fracture probability of 50% was obtained by using weighted probit analysis technique suitable for small-sample fatigue data sets. As the rails used for testing had different histories in terms of accumulated tonnage, the accumulated tonnages were averaged out to correct the test data. Furthermore, the estimation for remaining service life of long-term used rails was done by using the equations derived to estimate the bending stress of rail bottom considering the rail surface roughness and train speed. The conclusions of this study are as follows ; 1) Based on the test results for the stress range lower than fatigue limit, the Haibach's rule applying half slope of S-N curve over the fatigue limit was considered as more reasonable than the modified Miner's rule for the estimation of fatigue life for CWR. 2) As a result of this study analyzing the corelation among track support stiffness, track impact factor and fatigue life of rail, it was proven through experimental and theoretical analysis that the difference of track support stiffness caused that of dynamic track rail impact factor and accordingly the difference of rail bending stress caused that of rail service life(fatigue life). For extension of rail service life in urban transit, it was analyzed that the removal of rail surface roughness through a proper rail grinding as well as the maintenance for keeping a proper track support stiffness are significant factors. 3) As a result that the fatigue life of long-term used rails by the types of urban transit tracks was estimated by fracture probability, the remaining service life for fracture probability of 0.1% was approximately 213MGT in ballasted track and approximately 516MGT in concrete track, and total fatigue life was approximately 1,000MGT in ballasted track and approximately 1,400MGT in concrete track. When the rail surface roughness are controlled by rail grinding in urban transit, the rail service life can be extended at least approximately 500MGT more than existing rail replacement criteria(500MGT) in ballasted track and at least 900MGT more in concrete track with resilient pads, and it was also confirmed that differences of dynamic behavior characteristics between ballasted track and concrete track resulted in a great difference of rail fatigue life. 4) Therefore, these results are greatly higher than approximately 500MGT of existing rail replacement criteria in terms of accumulated tonnage which is applied for 50kg/m rail by both conventional railways and urban transits. The application of rail replacement criteria for conventional railways to urban transit is not appropriate; furthermore, a different rail replacement criteria between ballasted track and concrete track is required. We hope that the values of rail fatigue life from this study can be useful for safe and economical management of rail which is a basic component of track infrastructure of urban transit corporations.
