Broadband train communication networks have been used to improve functionalities and performances relevant to the train operations and safety. Furthermore, they have been utilized to provide the passengers on the trains with multimedia services such as video streaming, online gaming and messenger. However, the bandwidths of the existing networks were not enough to serve many passengers simultaneously. In this regard, this paper proposes a new wireless backhaul technology based on MHN (Mobile Hotspot Network) which uses a wide frequency band of millimeter wave to enable wideband Wi-Fi services on board. The proposed wireless backhaul technology based on the millimeter waves can provide overall backhaul capacity of 1 Gbps per train. The carrier frequencies are 31.5-31.75 GHz and they have not been used for commercial telecommunication networks before the usage. The MHN system is composed of mTE (MHN Terminal Equipment), mRU (MHN Radio Unit), mDU (MHN Digital Unit) and mGW (MHN Gateway). An mTE onboard in a subway train receives radio signals from mRU. The mTE distributes IP data over Wi-Fi access points (APs) that are sit on each train car so that passengers on the cars can make connections to Wi-Fi APs. The passengers can send data through APs, and the mTE transmits aggregate data from the passengers to the mRU. mRU’s are deployed along tracks. They are connected to mDU through optical fibers with one-to-one mapping. The mDU is connected to the Internet through mGW. 1 Gbps of data rate can provide 100 times larger capacity than that of the Wibro-based wireless backhaul that is currently available in Seoul subway. If the MHN system is used as a dedicated network for the subway train, several train-specific services are possible - remote train control; CCTV monitoring of passengers for the security purpose; platform–to-train realtime HD video streaming. In this thesis, the author introduces recent international development trends of communication technologies related to train networks and world-wide activities on the train network standardization. It also reviews some field experiments with millimeter waves and measured results. The results disclose clearly the channel characteristics of the subway tunnels. Based on the analysis of the results, the performance and coverage information of the MHN system can be provided. Next, it addresses the configuration of the MHN system including physical layer parameters of radio link. Details on uplink and downlink duplexing scheme, OFDM slot structure and antenna diversity scheme are described. Architectural designs of MHN baseband platform, modem, RF and higher layer protocol stack are described as well. In order to analyze the performances of uplink and downlink, some computer simulations have been undertaken. In conclusion, the MHN technology must be a promising candidate for the subway mobile radio networks considering the ever-increasing demand on bandwidth which is a core requirement for ubiquitous society.
