A singing class has been settled as an important part of a lifelong education program and the rate of participation in the class is now significantly higher than in any other program at lifelong education institutions. What is particularly interesting is that about 90% of the singing class participants are female and that women in their forties or older participate actively in the class. Although a singing class has been more activated than any other lifelong education program and lots of middle-aged and young-old women participate actively in the class, little research has been conducted to determine the status of singing classes, satisfaction with the classes, and the factors promoting participation in the classes. It is also difficult to find research for determining if middle-aged and young-old women have their life changed by participation in a singing class, what part of their life has been changed, if their life has been changed, and what meaning the change has for their life.
A survey was conducted to determine singing class participation status and satisfaction in terms of what made middle-aged and young old women participate actively in a singing class; a mixed study of quantitative research based on a questionnaire and qualitative research based on in-depth interview was conducted to determine what changes and meanings the experience of participating in a singing class brought to their life, why they began to participate in a singing class, how a singing class affected the plan for their future life, and what the prospect of a singing class was; and an attempt was made to determine how a singing class affected their life in two groups: middle-aged (40-<60) and young-old women (≥60).
First, as for singing class participation status and satisfaction, there were differences in the frequency of education between middle-aged and young-old women: the former were more likely to take the course once a week due to limited time and the latter were more likely to take the course twice a week. This result is also associated with economic activity: young-old women with less economic activity took two or three courses a week because they had lots of time and particularly because they felt lonely.
The time for a singing class differed insignificantly between large and medium- or small-sized cities but differed between cities and agricultural regions. Singing classes needed to be provided even in nighttime or on weekends for the sake of rural women and middle-aged women busy with economic activity. The majority of the women in large and medium- and small-sized cities participated in a singing class for ≥3 years and the majority of the rural women participated in a singing class for <6 months, though the class was provided in the unit of 3 months all year long. This result is probably because cities where diverse lifelong education institutions providing a singing class program are near make it easy to participate in the class, whereas agricultural regions had too few lifelong education institutions, were characterized by poor participation in a singing class in the farming season, and had such a class less accessible due to long distance.
Second, as for the reason for participating in a singing class for middle-aged and young-old women and the changes and meanings after the participation, while all of them participated in a singing class because they liked to sing a song, remarkable differences were found between middle-aged and young-old women: the former intended to improve their ability to sing and apply it to actual life because they had lots of chances to sing in the situation of social activity and the latter participated in a singing class because they felt lonely.
In-depth interview regarding the reason for participating in a singing class found that family members or acquaintances who had felt the effectiveness of a singing class through participation in the class positively recommended it to them so that all of them, including sisters, friends, and neighbors, could become happy together.
As for the effects of participation in a singing class and the changes, both middle-aged and young-old women got a tonic for living from a singing class, saw their character changed positively, became more self-confident, and saw improvement in their ability to sing; in particular, there was also a meaningful finding that young-old women got friends to share personal distress with while participating in a singing class.
As for the specific changes caused by participation in a singing class, the majority of middle-aged women had their thinking changed positively and the majority of young-old women came to sing with self-confidence. In-depth interview regarding specific changes found emotional, physical, and social changes. After participation in a singing class, they came to have a cheerful and positive disposition, became self-confident, led their life with an active attitude, and got a tonic for life in the emotional respect, saw depression, diabetes, and menopausal symptoms relieved and became healthier in the physical respect, and saw marital and interpersonal relationships improved in the social respect. The participation in a singing class was significantly effective in the improving the quality of life for both middle-aged and young-old women.
The factors for the changes included participation in a singing class, singing songs, the contents of the words, colleagues, and instructors; in particular, the role of instructors had remarkable effects. The participation in a singing class is not restricted to learning to sing a song but acts as a channel to participation in lifelong learning, which may lead to a new type of lifelong learning; therefore, an instructor as a leader in a singing class needs to have a good understanding of middle-aged and young-old women with a diversity of learning styles and teach them.
Third, as for the effects of a singing class on the plan for future life of middle-aged and young-old women and the prospect of a singing class, the experience of participating in a singing class gave middle-aged women a chance to enter the site of lifelong education through new learning and made young-old women satisfied with leading a healthy life happily with their family; both middle-aged and young-old women had a good prospect of a singing class but there were significant differences in the prospect: the former hoped for lifelong education institutions without a diversity of programs to provide diverse programs and wanted to be divided by age for the class. Such a significant difference is due to different experiences of living between middle-aged and young-old women.
A singing class allows middle-aged and young-old women to start lifelong learning with convenience, get energy for life, and start new learning through improved self-confidence due to the participation. So a few suggestions can be made as follows:
First, it is necessary to diversify the time for middle-aged and young-old women to participate in a singing class and establish legislation to supplement cultural facilities with the objective of improving the quality of life for middle-aged and young-old women in agricultural regions, blind spots of culture.
Second, efforts to solve problems in the facilities should be made by operating air-conditioning and heating systems properly to create a comfortable environment, by checking an acoustic system on a regular basis and repairing any uncomfortable chair as occasion demands, by supplementing convenience facilities for them, including resting places, and by urging lifelong learning institution employees to serve them well all the time.
Third, since a singing class program, which may lead to lifelong learning as well as to hobby activity, brought energy to middle-aged and young-old women's distressful life and can give a site for friendship based on gathering and communication, it is necessary to investigate and analyze their needs and develop a new lifelong education program.
Fourth, singing class instructors need to make every effort to provide adult learners with a diversity of good instructions. It is therefore necessary to reinforce supplementary training for the existing instructors with the aim of cultivating instructors with good character and qualification; it is also necessary to develop and provide diverse education programs for future singing instructors.
Fifth, as for the future, or prospect of singing classes, while about 80% of middle-aged and young-old women are generally satisfied with the current singing classes, middle-aged ones wanted to take a class based on age division; therefore, it is necessary to organize classes for a singing class program, taking age into account.
This study is expected to help redefine the status of singing classes from the perspective of lifelong education, operate singing classes effectively, recover self-esteem through the experience of learning in a singing class for middle-aged and young-old women psychologically withered, participate actively in social activity, and lead their own future life through a chance for new learning. The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data necessary to develop new life-long education programs.

The results of this study are expected to be useful as basic data necessary to develop new life-long education programs.
