This research is to determine the physical and mental pressure that the athletes of weight-class sports such as wrestling could feel from reducing their weight in a short period of time. In this regard, EEG frequency band tests were conducted among 13 wrestlers of K University in Gyeongnam Province to analyze the changes of their body composition, blood components and emotional states before and after short-term weight loss. paired t-tests were carried out using SPSS 18.0 to analyze the data. The results from the tests are as follows.
1. Short-term weight loss led to a meaningful decrease in weight, body fat percentage and free-fat mass(p<.05).
2. Short-term weight loss did not change the levels of epinephrine, dopamine and cortisol in the blood. Yet, blood norepinephrine showed a meaningful increase after the weight reduction(p<.05).
3. Short-term weight loss led to a meaningful decrease in alpha-wave, to a partial increase in mid beta-wave, and to a meaningful increase in high beta-wave and gamma-wave in the EGG frequency bands tests (p<.05).
In conclusion, short-term weight reduction among wrestlers (weight-class sports players) led to a meaningful decrease in body fat and free-fat mass but to an increase in the norepinephrine level of stress-related hormone. The short-term weight loss also increased beta (mid, high) and gamma(γ)-wave which are related to anxiety and stress while decreasing alpha-wave which is related to relaxation and stabilization. These results indicate that excessive short-term weight loss could lead to physical and emotional pressure or stress, resulting in underperformance and health issues.
Therefore, weight control of weight-class sports athletes(such as wrestlers) who must go through short-term weight loss should be more cautious. In addition, more efforts need to be made to develop more systematic and safe weight-loss programs through varied research so that the athletes could maintain their health career as well as high performance.
