A Study of the Measures for Utilizing Contents to Promote the Rice Cake Culture of Korea Food culture is an integral part of the day-to-day lives of mankind. For this reason, all countries, worldwide, are implementing globalization policies in relation to their national cuisines as a means to promote their national identities. Traditional food culture, in particular, is a cultural heritage that has developed over centuries, and its value is gaining more recognition today as it sheds light on the history and traditions of the country concerned. Korea has been spurring on efforts to discover and globalize its outstanding traditional food culture. As a result of these efforts, Kimjang, making and sharing kimchi in the Republic of Korea, has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Recently, efforts have been made to have Hansik, or Korean cuisine, registered by UNESCO by 2016. A matter that is worthy of noting is that tteok, or rice cake, has been included to the list of nominations for the registration of Korean cuisine. Rice cake culture has noteworthy value, as it became a staple food for Koreans even before rice. After rice became a staple food, rice cake naturally came to be considered a snack, a special dish and a food prepared for rituals. In other words, rice cake culture reflects the general culture and customs of Koreans, and it is an important tool that can communicate the national identity of Korea. However, with the introduction of various other foods in recent years, rice cake, which had been a nutritious snack, is gradually losing its significance and presence in the modern food culture. Amid this situation, there is an absolute need to discuss the measures to research and develop the rice cake culture of Korea. Accordingly, this study was conducted to examine the historical and cultural background of rice cake culture in Korea, with the purpose of conducting an as-is analysis of the contents related to rice cake culture and proposing measures to promote this culture. Rice cake culture of Korea has a significant value as it encompasses various cultural elements in the aspects of history, folklore and language, and thus needs to be passed on to future generations. This paper sheds light on its significance and value and purports to promote rice cake culture. Also, measures to utilize several types of contents for such promotion are proposed in this paper. Such measures aim to have rice cake culture become more deeply rooted in the day-to-day lives of the people, to archive the materials related to rice cake culture, and to establish a network of stakeholders and parties of interest. The research on rice cake, thus far, has been mostly been conducted in the fields of food and nutrition and culinary art. However, there is a need to conduct research on rice cake from the aspect of culture. Discovery of diverse materials on rice cake culture through ongoing research, and planning and using the contents thereof will greatly contribute to the dissemination of rice cake culture. The results of this study are expected to contribute to such efforts.
