ABSTRACT A Study on the Effect of Solution-focused Family Counseling on the Affecting Self-differentiation and Dysfunctional Communication of Separated Families Youn-Jin Jo Department of Convergence Industry, Seoul Venture University Seoul, Korea. (Supervised by professor Chun - Sung Youn) This study was conducted as a case study, one of qualitative study methods, for exploring how solution-focused family counseling principles changes self-differentiation and dysfunctional communication in families separated for emotional discords and restores their family relationships. Solution-focused family counseling was applied to the participants of this study through in-depth interviews in the VIP Room of Let‘s Run OO Branch at OO-gu, Seoul during the period from May 20 to September 14 in 2015. Each interview took 50 minutes for individuals, 80 minutes for couples or mother-daughter pairs, and 110 minutes for families. In analyzing data, statement data obtained through the in-depth interviews using the questioning technique based on the philosophy of solution-focused family counseling were analyzed and classified and individual family members’ behavioral differences between before and after the program were subjectively evaluated. In addition, the subjective changes were converted into objective scores through scale questioning. For the objectification of the case study, each family member’s self-differentiation and dysfunctional communication were tested before and after the program, and the results were processed through data coding and data cleaning and analyzed using SPSS v. 18.0. The results of analyzing subjective data based on the participants’ statements and objective statistic data were as follows. First, separated family members expressed their experiences in the change of individual or mutual relationship induced by solution-focused family counseling through their verbal and non-verbal subjective statements. Second, each member’s subjective change was assessed through scale questioning, a major concept of solution-focused family counseling, and presented in an objective score. Third, separated family members’ self-differentiation ability was enhanced through solution‐focused family counseling. Fourth, solution-focused family counseling reduced problem communication, which had caused conflicts and exchanges of reproach and blame, and increased open communication. Fifth, due to the particularity of separated families and the small sample size, this study had a limitation in testing statistical significance and the correlation between self‐differentiation and dysfunctional communication and deriving and generalizing valid results. This study had limitations arising from the family participants’ difficulty in making time, the small sample size, and exogenous variables affecting the participants’ economic and environmental situations. The significance of this study is found in that it proved separated family members’ experiences in the change of their personal or mutual relationships induced by solution-focused family counseling through their verbal and non-verbal subjective statements, and presented the changes in objective scores through scale questioning, and that it found that, as a result of solution‐focused family counseling, children recognized the reduction of their parents’ problem communication and experienced improved relationships. Due to the particularity of separated families and the small sample size, this study had a limitation in testing statistical significance and correlation, but the results of the pretest and the posttest suggest that family members’ self‐differentiation and dysfunctional communication affect their mutual relationship and are also related to the recovery of family relationships. This study is meaningful as the first case study in Korea with separated families that had lived separately due to emotional discords while maintaining legal relations but recovered their family relationships through solution‐focused family counseling and restored their living in the same house. The results of this study are expected to provide basic information for future qualitative research to enhance the efficiency and utility of preventive and therapeutic solution‐focused family counseling to promote emotionally and psychologically stable and healthy family relationships. Moreover, it is suggested to continue research to develop solution‐focused family counseling programs for families in the crisis of separation or disruption, dysfunctional families, and single‐parent families, and programs for promoting self‐differentiation and functional communication among family members like husband and wife, mother and child, and father and child, and to objectify the results of case studies.
