A Standardization Study on Developing the HTP Test Application; With a focus on response characteristics derived from the HTP Test based on the Big Five Personality Test원문보기

This study analyzes the response characteristics of the House-Tree-Person Test(HTP Test) based on the Big-Five Personality Test. The results of the analysis were used for developing a smartphone application that administers the HTP test. To analyze the response indicators of the HTP Test, a temporary website was run from December 2014 through January 2015, where subjects over the age of 20 and without any relevant experience submitted surveys designed to collect HTP data, totaling 363 in all. Three experts with master’s degrees in art therapy devised the HTP Test Analysis Table with forty-three categories under the House picture, twenty-seven under the Tree picture, and thirty-three under the Person picture by referring to existing works on HTP analysis and compiling the indicators that frequently appeared in the collected HTP sample pictures. The researchers divided South Korea into Seoul/Gyeonggi, Youngnam, Honam, Choongchung, and Gangwon provinces and conducted the HTP Test and NEO-II Personality Test on students of eleven universities in each province during March 2015. Of the collected data, 783 data samples were used as valid data samples. In order to vet the relevance of the indicators analyzed and the reliability among the researchers analyzing the data, the HTP Test Analysis Table used was created by the three art therapy experts and found that the degree of consistency among the researchers was 0.97. The initial technical statistical analysis was completed using SPSS Windows Ver 21.0, after which Dichotomous Logistic Regression Analysis and Multiple Logistic Regression Analysis was conducted to assess the correlation among the Big Five Personality traits, the twenty-four subordinate traits, and the HTP indicators. The results were the following. After conducting a Multiple Logistic Regression Analysis using forty-three categories of the House, twenty-seven of the Tree, and thirty-three of the Person as the dependent variable, statistically significant results were found in twenty categories of the House (size/location/shape of the house, pressure on the tip of writing utensils, characteristics of lines, shape of the roof, chimney, type/number/size of windows, fence, condition of the fence, veranda, tree, flower, dog house, well, windows on the roof, sun, and the existence of a pond or river), fourteen categories of the Tree (size of the tree, pressure on the tip of writing utensils, shape/shadows of the trunk, location of the roots, gnarl, animals, harmony of the trunk and branches, fruits, flowers, grass in empty space, shape of branches, small branches from the trunk), and twenty categories of the Person (size of the person, eye lashes, shapes of eyes, nose, mouth, ears, face, legs, hair, and arms; thickness of the neck, ratio of head to the body, balance between the two arms, length of legs, collars on shirts, buttons, tie, shoes, gender of the person, and facial expressions). Second, in conjunction with this study the menu and work floor of the application was organized for twelve months and began developing the HTP application based on the statistical results of the HTP samples. The application was developed in the following manner. First, a temporary website was set up for data collection, and a list was created of the collected HTP sample pictures, designs and assessment categories derived from the pictures. Second, the frequently observed designs from the samples were loaded onto the application and a database was created based on the results of this study. The data was standardized by conducting standardization and generalization studies after analyzing the algorithms of the database. In particular, a prototype of the application was created to prove the accuracy of the program. Third, the HTP application is divided into system manager and user sections. Users of the application can download on both Android and IOS platforms well as view the analysis of their psychological state by selecting preloaded HTP pictures. The remaining work for the app includes revising and complementing the interpreting capabilities of the application by adding the results of this study and conducting a beta test to confirm the user-friendliness and user-satisfaction of the app prior to its release. The results of this study use the implications of the Big Five Personality traits and their subordinate traits as the basis for interpreting the HTP Test and are largely in line with the interpretation results of the preceding studies and the clinical results in the field of art therapy. Some categories of the data required new perspectives for interpretation, which enriched the existing pool of known response characteristics. The significance of this study lies not only in discussing the necessity and strengths of an HTP Test app but also in the fact that it has standardized the interpretation of the HTP test, thereby allowing for production of an application that yields valid interpretation/consistent interpretation of the HTP Test.
