In fifth generation (5G) mobile communication system, the network is expected to integrate wireless local area network (WLAN), cellular network, and wireless personal area network (WPAN). Moreover, due to the advancement of M2M and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, a number of ‘things’ is interconnected through the radio access network (RAN). Therefore, communication service providers (CSPs) and mobile network operators (MNOs) are facing challenges in accommodating various mobile services and content, supporting massive amount of traffic and huge numbers of mobile connections. This thesis aims at enhancing end-to-end quality of service (QoS) of mobile applications. For this purpose, this thesis presents three different approaches for each part of the mobile network applications, i.e., mobile content delivery network (mobile CDN) service, low-power M2M networks, and service chaining on the mobile-edge computing. For the mobile CDN, a cluster-based cooperative caching (C3) algorithm is proposed that can minimize both content download time and network traffic in mobile content delivery networks (CDNs). Minimization of network traffic and data delivery time is important especially in the radio access network (RAN) of mobile communication networks. In a mobile CDN, a surrogate server (SS) may be able to deliver the requested contents to user equipment (UE) instead of the remote content provider (CP) if it has it stored, resulting in reduced content download time and network traffic load. In this paper, cooperative caching is applied to achieve these goals, by forming logical clusters of geographically distributed SSs, where the content request from UEs to the connected SSs may be redirected to the other SSs within the cluster before the content request packet is sent to the CP. It is shown that minimizing the content download time does not result in a reduction in network traffic, and vice versa. Therefore, by analyzing the optimization criteria between these factors, the proposed C3 algorithm solves this multi-objective problem using Pareto optimization. Simulation results validate that the proposed C3 algorithm reduces the time and traffic performance compared to existing CDN caching schemes. For the service chaining on the mobile-edge computing, cluster based service chaining (cNSC) is proposed to minimize end-to-end service time in the mobile-edge cloud where NFV enabled nodes are distributed over the network, and forms MEC clusters. The important benefit of the clustered MEC is that massive amounts of traffic that need to be traversed through NFV based nodes in the same cluster do not need to leave the cluster, and it results in significantly reducing the amount of traffic that is routed throughout the MEC. This results in enhanced bandwidth efficiency for each NFV based nodes. For the same reason, the end-to-end service time can be significantly reduced compared to non-cluster based structure, because each service chain route is created among nearby nodes within the cluster. Based on the NFV based mobile-edge cloud, the stochastic model for the service chain is derived which considers the number of flows, incoming flow rate, number of nodes, and required vNF resources. Next, service chaining time optimization is conducted to calculate the optimal number of MEC clusters (i.e., MEC size), and it considers the vNF popularity. Finally, NCS algorithm is proposed to allocate various types of vNFs to the clustered MEC, where popular more vNFs tends to more distributed over the network, and correlated vNFs are allocated in the same node. For low-power M2M networks, the hybrid data-type clustering (HDC) algorithm is proposed which focuses on maximizing the lifetime of a cluster-based M2M that supports hybrid data packet types while maintaining fairness among all nodes. Existing researches on clustering technology focus on homogeneous traffic consisting of a common packet type. However, realistic M2Ms have various types of data packet traffic, where certain data types (e.g., video and encrypted data) cannot be aggregated, some types may be partially aggregated, and some types can be fully aggregated. In addition, in this paper, a subnet-divided HDC (SHDC) is presented for networks that have subnet regions with different combinations of hybrid data packet types, in which the SHDC will execute the HDC algorithm based on individual subnets. Another distinguishing aspect of the presented research is that LEACH, LEACH-C, and BCDCP commonly assume that each WSN node is capable of transmitting a signal directly to the data-collection center BS regardless of its position in the WSN area, and also assumes that the collected l-bit sensor data (from each sensor node) can always be aggregated/compressed into a single fixed l-bit size regardless of the number of packets collected. These two assumptions have significant influence on the performance, where it will be later shown that when these assumptions are not applicable, the performance changes dramatically. In the simulation results show that the proposed HDC and SHDC algorithms can achieve a significant energy conservation performance gain over existing clustering schemes, such as LEACH-C and BCDCP.
