In this dissertation, a flexible patch antenna for low profile attachable bio-sensors and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) enhancement techniques for mobile applications are presented. For an antenna for attachable bio-sensors, a patch-type slot antenna for extremely low-profile on-body bio-sensors is presented in the medical body area network (MBAN) band. By locating the proposed antenna at the top of the sensor as a sensor cover layer, it would be to maintain compact and flexible sensor structure as well as to enhance its radiation efficiency. The proposed antenna consists of a rectangular loop for balanced feeding and patch with slots for radiating element, and it is designed on flexible printed circuit board (FPCB). To further improve the performance of the antenna with extremely low profile sensor, air substrate is employed to satisfy the bandwidth, gain, and efficiency requirements. The proposed antenna is measured on a human body model with permittivity and conductivity close to those of a human body. From the measured results, it is found that the 3-dB bandwidth of the antenna is sufficient to cover the entire MBAN band (2.36-2.39 GHz) and has a relatively reasonable peak gain of 1.62 dBi on the human body model. For EMC enhancement techniques for mobile applications, there are two parts, as follows: signal balancing methodologies for high-speed digital interconnects and reduction technique of radiated spurious emissions. In the first part, high-speed digital interconnects of a mobile high-definition link (MHL) system are fully investigated for mobile device applications using proposed analysis methods. There are two major factors that affect signal integrity (SI) characteristics of the system. One is that SI of the MHL system experiences degradation due to the discontinuous plane placed near the differential signal line. The other is that when the guard traces with ground via holes are asymmetrically located closer to the signal trace than the gap between the differential line, SI can significantly deteriorate. In both cases, impedance mismatch is caused by discontinuities in the return current path of the signals, resulting in the main reason for SI problems. To improve SI performance of the system, signal balancing methodologies are proposed, and design guidelines for the high-speed digital interconnect are provided. It is demonstrated that SI performance can be improved with constant characteristic impedance of the signal line and leading to a widely open eye diagram. In the next part, a quarter-wavelength open stub is proposed to reduce radiated spurious emissions (RSE) from mobile devices in the global system for mobile communications (GSM) 1800/1900 networks. Strong spurious emissions are commonly caused by nonlinear devices and clocks, as well as high-speed signaling sources. As the proposed structure is located on the signal line between the front-end module (FEM) and antenna, suppressing harmonic signals below a certain value (i.e., the certification test limit) is possible. To verify the effect of the proposed structure, the open stub is combined with a planar inverted-F antenna and low-pass filter in the FEM, and its performance is measured. The measurement results show that the radiated power at the second and third harmonic frequencies are reduced by about 6 dB to 13 dB while maintaining a reasonable insertion loss level of 0.7 dB in the carrier frequency band.
