A survey was conducted among university library users to study, compare and analyze user behavior of the university library website using PC and mobile services of the university library using mobile devices for the improvement of the quality of university library mobile services
For the purpose of this study, university library ‘I’ was selected as a subject of study for content analysis. The contents were categorized into customized service, use guidance, archives information, data research, electronic resources, inquiry, facilities information and miscellaneous. A survey questionnaire was created based on content of analysis. The survey was conducted among users of university library ‘I’ and a total of 238 persons participated in the survey. The content of questionnaire was categorized into demographic elements, user behavior pattern of the university library website, and user behavior of the university library mobile services.
This study aims to compare and analyze user behavior patterns of the university library contents depending on degree courses, the correlation among user behavior of the university library, relationship between user behavior patterns of the university library website and mobile services, and the correlation between satisfaction levels of users of the university library website and that of mobile services. Statistical analysis was conducted using frequency analysis, chi-square test, t-test, regression analysis, and correlation analysis using SPSS.
The result of survey can be summarized as follows:
First, it was found that user behavior patterns of the university library website and mobile services demonstrate meaningful differences.
Second, it has been found that contents that are barely used or regarded as useless are evenly distributed. This is the case for both users and nonusers of the mobile services.
Third, the majority of the survey participants ranked accessibility, which enables users to use the library without limits of time and space, as the use motives for the university library mobile services.
Fourth, both users and nonusers of the university library mobile services are found to hope to be provided with location information of archives through the library map.
Fifth, users of mobile services of the university library were found to be highly satisfied with the services since it is convenient, accessible, and it is without limits of time and space. In contrast, users were also found to experience inconvenience such as system error, and the slowdown of speed. Nonusers of the university library mobile services have pointed out the necessity of promotion of mobile services, error enhancement, and the simplification of content.
Sixth, the reasons for not using university mobile services were that “they were ignorant of how library mobile services were provided and the size of screen was too small to read the text.” Moreover, when asked about their willingness to use the services in the future, 69.2 % said they are going to use them, for reasons such as ‘convenience’ and ‘they became informed of such mobile services.’
Seventh, satisfaction levels of the university library website and mobile services were surveyed in five categories: service satisfaction, menu arrangement and location satisfaction, design satisfaction, system use convenience satisfaction, and system stability satisfaction.
As a result, it was noted that satisfaction levels were, overall, above average, and that website satisfaction was higher than mobile services satisfaction.
In an effort to analyze user behavior of the university library, a hypothesis was formulated and evidence was produced to support it.
First, user behavior patterns were found to vary depending on degree course.
Second, it was found that there is a casual relationship among elements of the university library mobile service user behavior patterns.
Third, user behavior patterns between the university library website and mobile services were found to differ from each other.
Fourth, user behavior patterns vary depending on whether participants use the university library mobile services.
Fifth, mobile services and website satisfaction showed correlation.
Sixth, it was found that mobile service users are looking for simplified mobile services.
Through this study, it was discovered that user behavior of the university library mobile services resembles that of the library website. But it was also found that some participants expressed their concern that it is inconvenient to read excessive amount of text on mobile devices which, due to their nature, cannot display a variety of content on a single screen.
Therefore, there is a need for more simplified content and system stabilization.
This research cannot be readily generalized since the subject of study is limited to university library users. It is expected that university library mobile services will continue to expand and user request levels will grow. Therefore, there is a strong need for future surveys on mobile service users.
