Objective: The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of emotional labor on depressive symptom in physical and occupational therapists. Subjects and Methods: A total of 891 physical and occupational therapists were surveyed in the service sector including physical and occupational therapists at hospital, community welfare center, clinic. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess general and job characteristics, emotional labor and depressive symptoms. The Emotional labor was grouped into five sub-scales such as ‘emotional demanding and regulation’, ‘overload and conflict in customer service’, ‘emotional disharmony and hurt’, ‘organizational surveillance and monitoring’, ‘organizational supportive and protective system’. They were classified into two groups (normal and risk). Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the relationship between the five sub-scales of emotional labor and depressive symptoms. Results: The results show that those who were female, long periods of time workers, and tertiary hospital workers tended to show a significantly high level of emotional labor(p<0.05). The study compared the degree of depression according to general and job characteristics. As a result, those who were in female, twenties, graduated from college or lower education, unmarried, had a regular job, shift worker, secondary medical institution worker, long periods of time workers, had a short career and worked as a occupational therapists, tended to show a significantly high level of depression(p<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that people(high risk group) who reported high emotional demanding and regulation had 1.645 times(OR: 1.645, CI: 1.107-2.443) greater of depressive symptom than normal group; emotional disharmony and hurt had 3.718 times(OR: 3.718, CI: 2.391-5.783) greater of depressive symptom than normal group; and people(risk group) who reported low organizational supportive and protective system had 1.594 times(OR: 1.594, CI: 1.120-2.269) greater of depressive symptom than those of normal group.
