The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of resilience on relations between parental empathy perceived by middle school students and their school adjustment. The study looked into the direct effects of parental empathy perceived by middle school students on their school adjustment and the indirect effects of resilience on their school adjustment.
For that purpose, the investigator conducted a survey with 366 seventh graders from four middle schools in Seoul, gathering data from them. Employed in the study were the parental empathy scale developed and validated by Jo Yong-ju(2010), the resilience scale for adolescents(YKRQ-27) developed and validated by Shin Woo-yeol, Kim Min-gyu and Kim Ju-hwan(2009), and the "School Adjustment Scale for Middle School Students" developed and validated by Lee Gyu-mi(2005).
All of collected data were statistically treated with the SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 22.0 programs. Mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis were obtained to review the descriptive statistics quantity of each major variable used in the study. Correlation analysis was conducted to examine connections among the major variables. In addition, structural equation model analysis and bootstrapping were performed to figure out the structural relations among parental empathy, resilience, and school adjustment.
The findings were as follows:
First, the study looked into correlations among parental empathy, resilience, and school adjustment and found that paternal and maternal empathy had positive correlations with the school adjustment of middle school students. Subfactors of paternal and maternal empathy, which include paternal and maternal awareness of emotions, acceptance of perspective, and empathic emotional reaction, had significant positive correlations with the subfactors of school adjustment, which include school work, school friend, school teacher, and school life adaptation. Cold emotional reaction, a negative factor of paternal and maternal empathy, on the other hand, showed significant negative correlations with all the factors of school adjustment.
The resilience of middle school students had significant positive correlations with all the factors of their school adjustment. There were significant positive correlations between the subfactors of resilience, which include control, positivity, and sociality, and those of school adjustment.
Secondly, the study also investigated the effects of parental empathy on the school adjustment of middle school students through structural equation model analysis. The analysis results show that both parental and maternal empathy had significant positive correlations on the path toward resilience. The resilience of middle school students had significant positive effects on their school adjustment. Resilience fully mediated between paternal and maternal empathy and school adjustment of middle school students. Paternal and maternal empathy had indirect influences on their school adjustment, and resilience had indirect influences on it. That is, the greater paternal and maternal empathy is, the higher resilience their middle school children have and the better their school adjustment becomes.
Those findings indicate that parental empathy has indirect impacts on the school adjustment of students via resilience rather than direct ones on it and that resilience, an internal factor of individual adolescents, plays relatively more important roles on their school adjustment than parental empathy, an external factor. If programs are developed and implemented in schools to increase parental empathy and improve the resilience of middle school students based on those findings, they will be able to prevent the school maladjustment problems in the early days of middle school and help with the positive development and psychological and social adjustment, in particular school adjustment, of adolescents.
